Stupid Html Question

I need to move the text inside a text field over just a little bit without using padding.....is that possible? When I use padding the box itself moves over, and i can only tell cuz im using safari.

Padding increases the size:
100px width + 20px padding left = 120px wide
Solution:
80px width + 20px padding left = 100px width
