Hey guys, I was riding a few hundred miles on my bike to go see a friend of mine, when all the sudden I'm getting back on the highway after getting gas and my rear tire locks up.
At 75 mph.
I was wearing a helmet, gloves, t-shirt, and jeans. No jacket, barely any protection.
I tried shifting, thinking maybe my clutch caught on something, but it did no good, and I ended up power sliding 120 feet into the blank spot between the on ramp of the highway and the highway itself where people were doing 90+ mph.
I don't know how I managed to keep my bike up, but I did, and after I came to a stop I panicked and called 911 because I was in the middle of the road, and my chain snapped and snagged my rear wheel so it couldn't be moved.
So I called the 911, the police came and we moved my bike to the shoulder, then I called my roadside assistance to get me to a shop I had looked up on my phone and called them. This shop actually had my chain in stock, and if the damage was repairable they could repair it for me the next day, but I'd need a hotel. The police left and I waited an hour for the tow truck in 105 degree weather with no shade and no water. Then, a truck pulls over for me. It was the guy at the motorcycle shop I had just talked to.
He loaded my bike onto his truck as I canceled my roadside assistance, and dropped me off at a hotel. The next day, I got a ride back over to the shop and my bike was repaired. Could have been much worse, too.

Sad that the chain broke, but good to hear that nothing serious happened and that you didn't have an accident, that could have been way worse.
Without truth, there is no justice.

Man, I don't know how many thread related to motorcycles you made, but I do remember a number of them being bad. You may want to consider severely cutting on your bike riding before you wind up making a "In Hell" thread from the grave. Then again, it may be a passion for you and not so easy. I'm just worried about you getting in a real dangerous wreck, is all.

Pretend not to care about anything, but be bothered by everything.
You may be fast on the roads but it's no use on the track.

I bet I know EXACTLY how it snapped. In my experiences with chain (albeit smaller size chain) it's always the same thing. The master link pops off. On traditional chains, the links are all connected pretty strongly, except the ends. If they didn't do that, it would be a pain to get the chain onto the sprocket without buying larger chain and cutting it down, but even then you'd need a master link.
The master link connects the two ends of chain, but it can't be as strongly connected as all the other links by nature. Newer chains use a rivet style link, while old ones use a little clip to secure the last link. Picture below, and I'd be willing to bet that if you look at your old chain, it's missing the link you'll see there. That little clip has never caused anything but headaches. It likes to pop off at the worst possible times. I'd be terrified to get on a bike with that style of chain. Hopefully your new chain uses the newer standard!
You're a very lucky guy Comrade. Kudos to you for keeping control of the bike. When chains pop and wrap around the sprocket like that, generally all hell breaks loose.

When I was a kid something like that happened to me. I was riding pretty fast downhill on a bike and my chain snapped and my bike almost rammed right into a truck that was driving up but right before I managed to steer it off the road (into a tree)

Shit man, that was a lucky escape.
My back wheel slid on my ride home tonight, probably only two inches or so on a wee spot of mud, but holy shit I had a minor heart attack.
By which point it was long over.
I've got a Scottoiler on my bike to keep the chain lubricated, but if that happened to me I'd never ride again, cause I'm a massive coward as it is.
Still, well done on not dying and all that.

Man... it's a damn good thing you weren't corning hard when your wheel locked, 'cause you'd have had some nasty oversteer to try to compensate for. Honestly, good on you for keeping the bike upright. I'm not an experienced rider (due to not owning a bike yet... >: ) but I know how dangerous that sort of situation can be.
Really though, people, it could've been a lot worse. If a wheel locks up, you definitely want it to be your rear instead of the front. If the front wheel locks up you're going over the handlebars unless you can pull off a stoppie while hopping to control it instead of using the brake (basically: no, you can't).
Good story though. Glad you made it out safely. My buddy has been in two bike accidents. Wrecked his first when some bitch slammed on her brakes because she thought he was following too close and the second when some idiot in a truck blew a stopsign and t-boned him at 30mph. I'm thankful those weren't at highway speeds.

Oh shit, those skid marks will be there for a while, a relation of a friend of mine was in a bike accident about 6 months ago, and the skid marks are still on the road. You're also incredibly lucky, the aforementioned relation of a friend didn't make it out alive..

Yep that's the chain that was on there, it had a little clip. Never buying one of those ever again, plus that chain had only been on there 3 days and was already getting rusty and nearly killed me. I have one of the new O-ring chains on now.

It's great that you're OK.
Things would have been very different if you hadn't somehow manage to take control of it.
Although, with the correct tools at hand, you could have removed the rear wheel whilst still in motion and shift all of your mass to the front wheel and you would then be driving the world's fastest power-unicycle.
