Apparently this technology now exists and was on National Geographic. It scans the item to a computer and creates a duplicate using a 3D printing machine and some powdery material.

Your thoughts on this?

What? That video makes them seem "high tech" but we have a 3D printer at our highschool for the engineering classes. I'm not sure if they're the same quality as those but we have them.

Yeah I've seen these, pretty cool. I actually saw a video of people transferring their Minecraft creations onto the 3D printer.

Well they had to do something to pass the time taking ideas from jurassic park films before they learnt how to make dinosaurs and stuff.

How long has this technology been around for? And exactly what do you guys create with them?

Hold on, if this one day becomes consumer technology, people could just upload any scanned objects to the internet, you could download them and print them off. Free stuff! (Not counting the cost of the powder).

It's cool, but it's basically theft. You can use a printed wrench as a real wrench, same for other tools you print. It's getting infinite wrenches for the price of one.

It would be awesome if you can print a saved image.

The copies come out as a plastic-like material, so not really. It's not a replicator.

I don't know, but at the end of the year all of the kids in engineering brought home a small prototype of a toy/machine/whatever made with one. Nothing too serious, but they're neat to watch.

They would be knock offs. No one would do it.

How does it know how the spinning mechanism works? I think they had engineers build the wrench in the software. You can't just scan a wrench and have the computer know how the mechanisms work, because some of the wrench isn't visible.

They probably designed them in software like you said, or scanned the original parts. That part was probably left out for the sake of keeping the "WOW" factor in the video. I hate it when that happens.

I've heard about them before, but I didn't know that they were actually strong enough to replicate the material used. Like in the video, I wonder how strong the printed wrench is versus the real wrench.

Pretty cool, but the guy who went there made a video responding to some things.
The moving parts were fake, and the replicated wrench broke after tightening harder. They didn't show that part though.

I think I've seen one of these replicate a car before.

Hmm.

I wonder where I've seen this before...
