what do you do to music files to make them take less space in flash but keep the sound quality?

Go to your sound properties (right-click the sound in the library), and set the compression to "mp3" and the bitrate between 48kbps and 96kbps. Decent quality, but not ridiculously large in size.

You could go to mp3 if you're using wav.

if you mean how do you make a wav a mp3. You would have to download a an audio converter and convert or you could just compress the whole file and delete the original that was more MB,KB, or GB.
