Fallout 2 was great, but I much prefer Fallout 1. I'd even say I prefer New Vegas to F2. Something about F2 doesn't click for me, I guess. Maybe the fact that they had so much lulzy shit in it like the Scientology parody, the radscorpion playing chess etc.

Yeah you have a point there, a lot of Fallout 2 was a bit too wacky, I get why they had the 'Wild Wasteland' perk in Fallout New Vegas.

I loved Fallout 2, it was just so wacky and New Reno was so interesting, and I love the soundtrack of the old games. Fallout 3 and New Vegas are decent games but they just aren't Fallout...I'm still very annoyed that Van Buren got scrapped, from the bits of the game people scrounged up and leaked and put together the plot seemed absolutely great and they didn't sacrifice any of the choice or roleplaying aspects the other two games had.

I have all the Fallout games, but I've never really spent much time playing 1, 2 or tactics. I've been meaning to install and complete them for a while now but I just never do. The few times that I have tried, I get maybe 15-30 minutes in and decide that I'm not too sure what I'm meant to be doing so just give up.
Everyone tells me how amazing the original Fallout games are, so I will need to make an effort to complete them at some point. I'd do it now if I had a working mouse.

The whole point is that you're given a long-term goal and a clue as to where you should start looking and investigate from there. You have to ask around town etc. It's really not difficult at all. It's just that you can't auto-pilot, like you can in most modern games.

The biggest difference between Fallout 1 and Fallout 3 is that you need to figure out what to do on your own for the most part rather than having an arrow telling you where to go and objectives constantly appearing on screen.

I bout Fallout 2 on steam, and I just could not get into it, no matter how much everybody praises it.
That's what happens when you're too used to new games. It just seems so archaic compared to 3 and NV.
I tried to like it, but I just can't.
It has been a while, though. I think I will try again.

The beginning of the second one is a total bollocks. I'd advise you to play the first one first as it's much easier to start off, and the second one is identical so you'll know what to do.

Fallout 2 was awesome, but the beginning of starting off in that tribal village without even so much as a pistol was ungodly horrible. But later on, the game gets much, much better. Meanwhile, it was horrendously filled with bugs, especially with the car you can get later on in the game.
The Bozar was undoubtedly one of the most kickass guns I've ever seen in a game, though. Shame they never brought it back.

Exactly this. I have a major hard-on for Fallout so I got those, played them for 15 minutes and completely lost interest.

I discovered that my mouse is working right now, so I'm going to install the first Fallout. It would never have happened if it wasn't for this thread :3

I liked 1 and 2, but I liked 2 a bit more, it was longer and had more things to do in it, but both games are very similar.
You can pretty much "cheat" in the game by getting the Enclave power armor and a plasma rifle pretty much at the beginning of the game by going to San Francisco and doing the mission for the brotherhood there. Also by getting a Bozar pretty much at the start as well.

Fallout 2 was definitely my favorite. I will say I loved FO1 and Fo2 more than the newer Fallout 3 and New Vegas---though I enjoy those games greatly.
They (fallout 1/2) were just pioneering RPGs. And a lot of people whine about them being turn based and the graphics.....but some of you guys weren't even born when that game came out!!! Back then, those were awesome games.
I played Fallout 2 over and over. It was definitely more wacky than Fallout 1. But I didn't mind and I loved the Easter Eggs. And this is going to sound terrible....but Fallout 2 earned it's Mature rating. Lots of sex, you could make a porn, you could use condoms! That was a riske' game for its time. Not saying that made the game at all, but they didn't hold back on anything, they made a hardcore game with well developed characters and tons of interactions.
The entire series is just something I'm in love with though. I started playing when I was like 13 or 14. I'm an old lady now at the ripe age of 27. I love post apocalyptic settings.
When they canceled Van Buren, I was angry as hell. And if you know what that was, then you are awesome. (If you didn't have to google search it just now. :-) )

Was that the one being developed for Black Isle?
I would have been upset, if they released more info on it.
I'm going to try to get into Fallout 1 again, but maybe i'll never understand because I was born in 1994...

Also, you ALL need to read the Fallout Bible. It's the best piece of game literature available (Bar Metro 2033)

God, don't say shit like that. Just use your brain. I know we aren't used to it since modern games hold our hands so much, but Fallout is not at all hard or complex. Character creation is very simple, and from then on you just usually have to talk to people in towns about your goal.

Stop talking bollocks, I was born in '95 and it's my favourite game of all time.

I played it for a few hours or so yesterday and actually tried to play properly this time. It's not as confusing as I remember at all. The quest log in the Pip-Boy is really vague to say the least, but it's not too hard to work most things out.
I admit that I needed to use a guide to find out where I get the rope needed for entering Vault 15, but other than that it wasn't hard at all. Took me a while to work out how you reload weapons too and I'm still a little confused as to how you repair them because I've already had my 10mm pistol and a knife break on me, yet I have a repair skill.
But yea, with a little trial and error the game isn't hard to play at all Kieran.

Good decision.
I got a little annoyed when I realised that there was an in-game timer for you to get the water chip (or however the story progresses) and it limits me from wanting to explore. Does the timer go away once that part of the story is resolved? You can pay the water merchants in The Hub 2000 caps or whatever for a 100 day increase, but hopefully I don't need to bother with that...
Also, Kieran, that Fallout Bible is mental. It's about 250 pages of information regarding the background details of the Fallout series. Talk about dedication.

I've only got the second game, so that will have to do.

I know, a staggering amount of work went into that. Black Isle should release it as like, an official Fallout Encyclopedia.

If they organised it better first it would probably make an interesting read for Fallout fans, but as it stands it's a bit of a mess. I feel like I'm just reading through a jumbled selection of questions and answers, which is pretty much what it is. Still, some nice trivia in there.

Yeah, it needs a bit of optimization, but it's impressive work considering it was created by the fans.
Made my first character, pretty balanced.

I spend ages trying to figure out what a good character build will be for me. I'd stick with the default ones, but they seem strong in specific areas and weak in others. I prefer characters to be decent but not great with most skills.
This is what I ended up playing with:

The 150 days are more than enough time, imo. But anyway, yeas, the time limit will go away once you're done with the chip.
