Some of her music is pretty neat sounding, I just wish they used alternative instrument sounds, because some of them are annoying-sounding. Of course, I've never been into the whole pop scene anyway (although MJ's stuff is pretty good). I've always liked stuff with real instruments (and some synth, not a lot). Which is why I like rock and metal better. More of the stuff from the 70s to 90s, though.
Honestly, I think most modern multimedia is going to shit. Music, TV, movies, etc.

Seriously, I'm serious.
Almost every youth nowadays understands her, and her songs. And she got all the ads in the all kinds of medium (Media) so everyone even if they doesn't know her name recognizes her face. Plus she got a team of people who are good in selling her.
I think that's all into it.

Err... of course you won't understand if she doesn't make the kind of music that you like. I like her, not because of her music, but because she genuinely doesn't seem to give a fuck about what other people think of her.
