Why, Criterion? Why!? 2011-07-11 00:59:51 Reply

Excuse if this is old news, I just found out about the gameplay today.

For those who don't know, Criterion Games is the developer of the Burnout games -- one of my favorite racing series of all time. I loved Burnout 3 and Revenge, and while Paradise was good in its own right, I felt it could've been better. I've been waiting for another game after Paradise. Something that's more of the arcade style game like Revenge was.

A while ago, I've heard from Destructoid about a new Burnout called Burnout Crash. I think it was a leak or something, but I was stoked. A new Burnout game?! Awesome! I was hoping for another Revenge or maybe a hybrid of that and Paradise. My hopes were high.

Then it fell like a twenty-ton anvil from space.

Seriously, just... why? I realize it's a download-only game, but... wow. This is just terrible. This shouldn't even have the Burnout name on it. It's a disgrace to the Burnout franchise as a whole.

Anyone else out there that shares my pain, or just a fan of Burnout in general? Have you tried Burnout before? Moving on, discuss about this... this... THING.

Aaaany way, I honestly don't think this seems that bad.

One of Burnouts' biggest selling points is its amazingly fun showtime/crash modes. A standalone and simplified arcade-style version of the popular mode just doesn't click as something crazy and taboo like everyone is making it out to be.

Not like it's a big step down from Paradise.

Joking aside, this really is quite terrible. Hopefully they'll return to the Burnout 3/Revenge formula.

Yeah, I'm with you on this.

All this is, is a top-down crash mode from Revenge or Takedown. It appears far better than, say, Paradise's abysmal bounce-a-car-down-the-road-forever mode.

I can agree to an extent. It's not a full-retail game, which is a good thing (otherwise I'd rage a lot, lot more). As a downloadable game, it can be fun for what it's worth. I can dig the arcade sound effects, though I hope the narrator can be turned off.

However, I'm kinda disgusted that it shares the name "Burnout". Compared to the other Burnout games, it's pathetic. It looks like an iPhone game. In which yeah, it would fit. But this sharing a name to the other Burnout games... IDK, it feels bad man when you're waiting for something bigger than Paradise and getting a cheap download game.

Maybe it's just me being a fanboy. But I was expecting something far bigger than this. Or maybe they are working on it and this is just a side thing? I don't know.

No, you're not being a fanboy. Everyone has every right to be pissed off about this piece of kinect shovelware bearing the Burnout name.

So the only problem you have with this game is that it is being called "Burnout", despite it being a standalone version of a mode from Burnout?
That you were expecting a full game?

I was expecting a sequel to Paradise or a game similar to the style of Burnout 3 or Revenge. Not that I was expecting Burnout Crash to be it, but I wanted something that is better than an arcade game based on one single mode from Burnout. My problem isn't only that it bears the Burnout name (which, compared to the real Burnout games, looks like pure balls). It's the fact that it's just NOT Burnout.

Crash Mode is fun, and I liked it. But a full game centered around it? No Road Rage? No racing? No traffic checking mode? No elimination racing? No interesting race tracks with multiple branching shortcuts and awesome feel of crushing your opponent? This isn't Burnout. It's just Crash Mode that's Kinect-ified and looks like an iPhone game.

Take it for what you will. But this isn't Burnout and doesn't deserve the name of it. Even if it were called something else, I'd still think of it as nothing more than a quick game. A quick game to get into and quick to get boring.

Sounds good to me!

naw i see your point, I'd love a burnout 7 too, but traffic checking was seriously rubbish. Burnout 3 Takedown was perfect imo.

And how are these not valid complaints? It's been 3 years since Paradise was released and the new Burnout game is this? It's a piece of money-grubbing shovelware trash that taints the Burnout name.

Do elaborate. I haven't played any of the previous Burnouts, but I found Paradise to be highly satisfying.

I'm obviously joking, since Paradise is leaps and bounds better than this turd, but I didn't like Paradise in general. I think the open world ruined the pacing of the game. I dunno, something didn't click for me.

Again, "This isn't what I expected!" isn't really a good complaint/argument.

So expecting an arcade racer with an emphasis on destruction instead of top down 'jump to explode' Kinect junk from Burnout is being a stupid fanboy?

I get it, everyone hates rehashes. Or at least likes to pretend to hate them. But there's a difference between rehashing (see: any sports game), proper sequels that change and improve stuff, but the core game mechanics stay the same, and something that just cashes in on a name (as is the case here).
