Uh, the kid easily could have died from the poison. Walt was flying blind when he did it. Lily of the Valley, at least IRL, can kill people, especially elderly and the young.
Walt poisoned the kid as part of a gambit to protect himself.
Todd shot the kid to directly protect themselves.
So what, exactly, is the difference besides Walt's plan being able to spectacularly have blown up in his face?
