For those of you in denial, let me break it to you. The new bill, S.978, makes it a felony for "any recreation of a copyrighted work through a public performance by electronic means".
This means cartoon parodies on Newgrounds, drunken karaoke recorded on your smart phone and posted up, posting a Youtube of your favorite game, your little niece singing some god awful Britnney Spears song in her facebook post, and any other "recreation of a copyrighted work through a public performance by electronic means.
This law needs to be stopped, and only you can do it; the people who care about these rights the most, whether you realize it yet or not.
To be clear, when passed, it becomes the responsibility of the U.S. Government, the same government that has 5% of the world's population and 25% of the world's prison population, to put you in jail for five years for each violation.
Private prisons are open for business, and they 'buy' prisoners from state prisons and jails for cheap and make you pay for your stay while there.
Always remember, for every dollar spent, there is a dollar earned. It costs a million dollars for one maximum security prsioner, and several hundred thousand for each normal prisoner, each year. That is a lot of money going into peoples paychecks, and YOU are the job.

People don't need to try and recruit people for this kind of thing, because it's ALWAYS shot down regardless.

If this bill ever passes, we should kill ourselves and deny the private prisons their money.

As much as I am against this bill I have seen like 5 threads for it and haven't been that active the last few days. You know, just stick to 1 and make it good. Quality over quantity.

And people like you, sir, are the reason why only people who actually participate make a difference. The problem is that you aren't one of those people. That means that you aren't represented in this country, that people like you will be stepped on by large companies, because they know you won't fight for your rights.
This is about expanding copyright protection, a way to screw YOU for using 'protected' speech in a harmless way, so that you can't express yourself. 'Free speech' is only free until someone drops $5000 or more to purchase it and copyright it.
If you want to make a difference, just drop your name and email to the link and send a message to congress, because in government, it is quantity over quality. In matters of taste and opinion, it is quality over quantity. So if you value your opinions, you have to play the game.

if it passes, every porn addict on the net will have withdrawals because I've never heard of anybody really 'paying' for porn, which is all copyrighted material that is widely ripped off and distributed. lmao, maybe things will get interesting then, because its a widely distributed statistic that about seven tenths of America frequently visit free porn sites.
And lets be honest, sometimes you just have to have a look.

well here's another logical conclusion. If a politician has a sex scandal, like that Senator Weiner dude, the pictures can simply be copyrighted. If that happens, it would be a felony to expose it. Having an affair isn't illegal, which means that copyrighting evidence of it makes reporting on it with those pictures a felony. This hurts the freedom of the press.
Watchdog agencies will be hurt by the inability to expose corporate secrets that could be dangerous to the public, as long as those secrets are copyrighted.

This will never pass because it would take ages for them to get everyone. then you got people in other countries and they can't do anything about them meaning Americans would be pissed that they can't upload videos of them simply having fun doing karaoke or video games while other countries can. Thus, people will continue to do it even if it passes.
On another note, that is the stupidest bill I've heard of so far. There is no harm done in someone singing karaoke and uploading it, making parodies of games, or simply uploading a video helping show a viewer how to beat a level.

That is exactly why you, a member of the American public, need to click that link, and be one of the hopefully millions of americans that tell our less than 500 representatives that it is a bad idea. If you let them do it on their own, all they will hear is that it is good for the film industry, good for lawyers, good for prison guards and doctors with more prisoners to look after, good for everyone that makes a paycheck off of your suffering.
Its time for people to take charge and stop letting these things go unnoticed. The mainstream is the wrong stream, so make a raft and get on top of it by fighting the waves of bad policies in the waters.

Great idea, alienate the people who currently control the House and who make up a significant part of our population by insulting their party.

I think this is misunderstood, it seems to be geared more around public performances released and damages done (money lost or misdirected). More to do with someone who might prey, pirate and profit off of it, regularly.
Alot of games allow and even encourage machinima "under certain guidelines". Such as, there may be a cap on money made from doing it.
It would seem to me that someone who declares a parody, uses it moderation, gives credit where it's due, without stealing all of one's work and draggin' it under, declaring fair use with a reasonable explaination somewhere..would be alright. If not then maybe strike 1 out of ten?
Someone who would basically use someone else's material ,as if it were their own,to crank out albums or a series or just pirating new releases as they come, would not..
From what I read it doesn't has anything to do with political figures. It has to do with hacks stealing and regurgitating a buncha material that doesn't belong to them.
