Carrie Fisher was in "The Burbs", which is a good movie if you're in the mood for some light hearted entertainment. She was that smacked up on Cocaine and whatever else she could probably get her hands on that it probably limited the possibility of her getting other roles.
Mark Hamill continued to earn a living through the Star Wars spinoffs, like video games, despite him being a bitter bastard ("boo-hoo, Star Wars ruined my career". Get the fuck over it, you didn't have a career worthy of speaking of prior to those movies, Mr. Hamill).

Many of the actors already listed are good examples. One I noticed that was left out was John Hurt. He's been in many good movies, but nothing probably stuck out more than his role in Alien. (He was the one who had the alien bust out of his chest.)
There are also a lot of good actors who aren't alive anymore, and never really got the chance to shine. But you could just tell that they would be good in leading roles.
I don't think "under-rated" is a true term for most of these actors, however. They just keep out of the spotlight for the most part, and are happy to do independant or indie films, instead of these multi-million dollar blockbusters. In other words, you just don't see half of what they do because it isn't backed by insane ammounts of advertisements and/or they are in select few theaters.

Gary Oldman has some really, really, REALLY shit roles in some movies. See Quest for Camelot and Lost in Space.

Alright, I haven't seen those, but riddle me this - is his performance shit, or is his role just shit (as in, something that is beyond the remit of his acting skills)?

Don't forget his voice acting work. The dude MADE the Joker.

He does a fairly good job with the source material, considering how appauling it is in both movie. I'd say most of the problem is the script itself.
Nostalgia Critic has both of them reviewed and does a pretty good job at taking the piss out of both of them.

Just be prepared for some incredibly hammy acting from him in them. Oh, and don't forget he was the baddie in Fifth Element too.

I think that Shia Lebouf, Zach Galifinakis, and Michael Cera are the most overrated actors of all time.

Being an old IASIP fan, i've always been convinced that someday Charlie Day would rocket on the movie scene and become famous elsewhere. I was pretty stoked when I saw him as one of three leads (six?) in the new movie horrible bosses, and I can already predict he'll practically steal the show. Just brilliant comedic timing on this fellow, by far the reason Always Sunny was (is) so successful

Have you been watching Boardwalk Empire? It's a really good HBO series that he stars in. He got a Golden Globe for it last year.
Ah yes, he was brilliant in Leon and generally plays well in a lot of films. One of those actors you can count on. Yet, he has never really won any prestigious awards.
He's getting a lot of buzz for Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. Hopefully it works out for him (although the big award is probably going to DiCaprio for J. Edgar).

True. He has that "everyman" type thing about him, and it works.
I think my favorite underrated actor is Matt Damon. If you look at the films he's done besides Good Will Hunting, a lot of them have gone under the radar. The Bourne Trilogy is arguably near flawless yet for an action movie it felt like it didn't get much press.

Yet sadly most people I know only know him as the funny looking guy that was in a few Adam Sandler movies.

Haha, what was the name of that show that he kept getting invited to, but didn't appear on? Whatever it was, he eventually lost it and started ranting about it in the credits of the show. Later, the host's girlfriend put together a song, "I'm fucking Matt Damon" or something like that. Oh yeah, it was Jimmy Kimmel that kept on dissing him and Sarah Silverman that did the song:

Steve Buscemi really knows how to steal the scene.
I remember one of the more recent movies I saw him in was The Messenger. Now, he's in this movie for one 10 minutes scene, give or take a few minutes, and yet it's one of the best in the movie. He always comes ready to make it memorable.

He is a great actor. It's his look. He has an interesting face. The way he delivers his lines gets the viewer invested in the plot of the movie. That has always made him a valuable cast member in any movie. I'm always happy to see him randomly show up in movies, because he has these unexpected little parts in them sometimes. He's funny too. I like his appearances in Adam Sandler movies. He was perfect for Fargo. He's more than an oddball character, but he was equally perfect for the role of Donnie in The Big Lebowski. I really liked his performance in Desperado.
Fun fact: Some of you probably haven't seen Tales From the Darkside: The Movie. Steve Buscemi is in that too. He plays a guy who summons a mummy to kill people who fucked him over. Christian Slater and Julianne Moore are in it too.
Which brings me to two other fine, yet under-rated actors. Christian Slater is great. I don't see him in as many movies as I would like to. He is above these stupid straight to dvd movies, like Hollow Man 2. (I'll admit, I liked the first one with Kevin Bacon.) Julianne Moore was also in The Big Lebowski. She played Clarice Starling in Hannibal. She's under-rated as far as I'm concerned. She needs a break-through character to get her noticed again in Hollywood.
Oh, and RAY LIOTTA! He was great in Goodfellas. It seems like he has just never been able to top that performance. He's been in alot of movies, and still he seems under the radar for some reason.
Also, Paul Giamatti. Bill Paxton, Edward Furlong, Tim Robbins, Don Cheadle, Ethan Hawke, Jeff Daniels, and Jeff Goldblum. There is so much untapped talent in these people. I feel like I'm leavng out so many great actor. You people have already named alot of them, so I don't have to repeat their names, but I agree with most of you.
