This is one of those problems where you need to provide an example of the picture you're working on, what program you're using, and whether you're using different layers.
Off-hand, people would probably recommend reducing the brightness which, I assume, you already know.
It could be that the you haven't selected what you want to adjust, or you may have accidentally applied a mask. We can't know for sure until you provide some more information, and a preview of the pic you're working on, or your workspace.
Well here's the picture, its too big to put in the post so I put it in my dumping ground. As you can see it gets really blotchy and i tried to blur it in but it doesn't have any effect.

Dude, that image is almost solid black on my screen. Are you sure your monitor/video card gamma or brightness isn't out of whack?
the middle is suppose to be pure black other then that you may have to save it to the desktop to see it correctly.
Nah, don't worry, it's definitely dark enough.
Yea but is there anyway I can make it not so blotchy

It's not. Like, at all.
You look nice today.
This guy brutally sodomizes me.
Cereal is pretty cool. If you're cool you'll add me on Steam. Also, Letterboxd.
I'm struggling to get this blotchy effect that you're referring to. Below is the pic with the brightness reduced by a further 100.
If you've made this pic in photoshop or GIMP, and your pic looks nothing like the one I uploaded, it might be worthwhile uploading the PSD file to the Dumping Grounds as well
i think that image doesn't need more darkness, but more contrast. it adds a much more dramatic feeling to the picture than less brightness.
turkey, i've just oticed that the link in your sign seems to say "penis land". i was kind of surprised when i discovered it's actually "pen island". you have a lot of gay visitors, don't you?
i would rather have a picture you can see then having to stand up at an angle too the screen to make out ANY detail what so ever... you might as well just put a black screen...
i have no idea what you are trying to accomplish by darkening the picture further...

That might've been the joke
That's what it looks like to you? Weird It not even remotely that dark on mine. If thats how dark it's on your I may not want to darken that much. Thanks but now I'm confused why it so dark on your but not mine lol.
This sounds like a problem I encountered myself when working with Aigis on our game "the outsider". Aigis thought all my drawings were too dark, and I thought all his drawings were too light; It turned out that somehow my monitor displayed the dark end of the spectrum brighter than it actually was. I think I fixed it by going to my control panel; opening my nVidia control panel and under "Display" > "adjust desktop color settings" I checked "Use nVidia settings" instead of "Other applications control color settings".
I suppose its similar for different videocards
Did you actually read what ToaS typed?

So this is not the way it is displayed for him in the jpg you uploaded.
If you really want any more useful help you should also try this:

Good luck!
Well I lighten it a lot and it made it look perfect on my screen but I'm still not sure about everyone elses so here the picture.

This one should look a lot brighter then the other, I hope...
