Most expensive software ever? 2011-06-28 13:57:55 Reply

Just a fun bit of news - Celemony, makers of Melodyne, just released a piece of software called Capstan for removing wow and flutter from old vinyl and cassette recordings - for 4500 dollars, more than most species of Pro Tools HD, hardware included.

anyone heard of more obscenely expensive software for such seemingly limited uses?

Well, maybe not for limited uses. But autodesk have a lovely package...

http://store.autodesk.com/store/adsk/en_
US/buy/productID.227035500

It's purely for post production pipline work. So needless to say like Aftereffects, only better. Add you subscription on to that and it's a whopping $16,990.00. And you really need the subscription, or you'll need to pay the fee anually. To add on top...youve got to love its' recommended system requirements...

Mac® Pro workstations
8 or more cores
12 GB or more recommended.
AJA® KONA 3 or AJA® KONA 3G required for video I/O and monitoring
Monitor support: 1920x1200, 2560x1440, or 2560x1600 resolution
At least 500MB

Hillarious...You have to consider though, industry standard has went down significantly, Maya used to be $15,000, with competition they've been force to drive their price right down. This is why I find it hillarious when people say OMG flash is soooo expensive.

It's actually more expensive than the bundle with all the Waves plugins

I'm kinda the same way. I just love that classic vinyl or cassette feel. Of course a CD or an mp3 player is significantly more convenient for finding the song you want to hear in a hurry...

Wow and flutter is great, unless the tape is at a point where it feels like someone turned the depth knob on a Chorus effect up to 10. I imagine it's aimed at those sort of records where the Wow and Flutter are assymetrical, asynchronous and fairly severe.

That plug in will make the job of whoever is asked to Master old albums in the future very happy. It will also allow mixing engineers to fix Opera singer's and their crazy ass vibrato. And who wouldn't want to spend 4,500 on that?

Of course, the price of Flash is still pretty high, especially on a minimum wage/college/high school student salary.

Well let's say it's not directed at normal folks who have a few LPs they'd like to rip. It's a professional tool for studios (especially mastering studios), and they can probably make up that sum again pretty fast when they start profiting on the recovered recordings and recovering lps for normal folks as a service.
