A few questions for NG for my book 2011-06-24 21:38:22 Reply

Im aware that this isn't a creative writing forum, but since many of you are pretty damned smart I thought Id ask some questions, and perhaps some suggestions.

1. My novel takes place on earth in the year 2250, after world war 3, I realized i wouldnt be satisfied placing the story in America or the UK or whatever, so I thought perhaps a nuclear missile would strike in the mid-atlantic area of the ocean and open a massive rift in the earths crust and an unfathomable amount of magma would be released and in 150 years it would look like any regular continent with trees, flowers and wildlife etc., this new continent would be abount the size of 2 spains side by side. is this at all realistic? i've heard hawaii formed fairly quickly and a massive release of magma could form a continent somewhat quickly as well. Sorry if this idea sounds stupid and like it actually take millions of years.

2. In my novel, America is completely unihabitable and Europe isn't very well off either, is it reasonable to suggest that communication and mass production would become impossible? I want my future earth to have futuristic technology but have the qualities of a society in the 16/17/1800's

3. Does the name Aaron McLaine sound decent? What about Terra Everhart?

4. I could use some suggestions for some last names...Michael and Lloyd.

Thanks a bunch! =)

Aaron McLaine sounds more gay than Terra Everhart, which sounds more gay than Aaron McLaine.

Think about it.

Khazinsky. They ALL should have last name Khazinsky. EVERY CAHRACTER, EVERY PET ANIMAL, EVERY TOWN, EVERY SHIP, EVERY DISTRICT, EVERY STREET. EVERY FUTURISTIC INVENTION YOU PUT IN YOUR BOOK ASWELL.

Thanks a bunch! =)

No problemo.

It doesn't have to be realistic, it has to be reasonable. By communication you mean, government regulation? As in no longer allied? You might need to tell us more than what you already have.

hmm, perhaps.

No, I mean, it's impossible because cell phone towers, internet etc. are destroyed by the bombings, like earths pretty fucked up but not annihilated, not fallout 3 post apocalypse, but it's to the point where mass production and much of earths resources are destroyed, therefore, no machinery and whatnot.

Is that believable?

If you're going to do sci fi, at least get your science right. One nuclear bomb would not be enough to cause a rift in the earths crust and a big enough bomb would probably annihilate the WHOLE surface of the earth, similar to a huge asteroid impact. Even if it were plausible for a huge bomb to make a rift big enough without destroying the surface there's still radiation to think about which would kill pretty much anything in a decade, due to mutations, birth defects, cancers, DNA damage of all kinds. And I say bomb and not a missile because the mass required would most likely not be able to have any lift.

It's the radiation which is feared, not so much as the blast.

So yeah, research.

Well what's important is to write what you feel like writing. So if it's about a vampire apocalypse or a prince and a princess dancing in a castle, may it be. But be patient and really think your ideas out before actually launching yourself in.

I'll give you a few tips: do your own research if you're unsure of the realism of something. Check Wikipedia, a Public Library, ask your dad, your school teachers, etc. You're better off asking them than people on Newgrounds.

Well it can be a society that continues to know about technology and stuff but doesn't have the means to mass produce it. And maybe the quality of said technology leaves a lot to be desired, too. (Machine that break down frequently, etc)

Writing forum works just as well, but fine, I'll answer some questions.
1) Sounds kinda realistic
2) Also possible
3) Terra McLaine
4) Arron Lloyd
