3D Modeling Challenges 2011-06-22 17:34:33 Reply

Hey guys! So I'm trying to stay in shape with my modeling for Uni and I thought I'd share. This is something they do over at CGSociety but I wanted to see the NG 3D scene. So the deal is:

Below is a list of objects to model of varying difficulty. Then you (and I) pick whatever ones you want and make them. The catch being that the objects should be made in less than two hours and if you texture them less than five. Of course with no prizes or anything I can't hold to these times and sometimes things get messed up and it takes longer. So the time is for a challenge but shouldn't stop anyone from trying.

Feel free to use any 3D software Maya, 3DS Max, Modo, Mudbox, ZBrush, Blender (which is free btw) or anything I didn't mention. Just NO DRAWING. Renders or screen caps can be posted. Its nice to see people's wireframes.

Hopefully people are down for this?

Objects:
Video game controller
water bottle
barbell
baseball
skateboard
flashlight
door handle
drum
beer can
pizza box
spray paint can
computer mouse
USB drive
laptop/desktop computer
light bulb
missile
amplifier
stuffed animal
sword
helmet
greek column
tent
windmill
test tubes and beakers
space ship
bicycle
shovel
a castle crasher

I might add things throughout the summer but I wanna see if anyone is interested so far.

Yeah I'm up for it. I wont be able to do them all because I work late all around the week. But if the timing is extended I could put in the effort. I dont like doing things for a couple of hours. It becomes almost pointless as it becomes half assed at times.

I'd rather time out and model something which is worthy of the portal, or putting up somewhere like dev art...so we could say give ourselves a week between each model. That gives people time to see the thread, as we're from all over the world here and maybe work over the weekend. That I can do!

So if it was like a pizza box, well you could model the box, texture it, then have a slice of pizza in there...trying to make it photorealistic or stylistic. Speed challenges are great to push yourself, but quality always beats quantity everytime.

A lot of people asked me to model a PS3 Slim, so it's on my list of to do if you want to take a shot at making a console?

yeah i'd love to see what you can do with a lot of time and craft. this isn't supposed to promote rush jobs, most of these things really shouldn't take more than 2 hours to model. so if you could post 2 hours of work and then show us a finished product too that would be rad.
and i work a lot as well so i probably won't get around to posting my own until the weekend.

Yeah, sounds good. I need to take on Kinsei anyhow, he's been going ape on the art forums posting stuff everyday! :P

Some days I just wont feel like coming home and working in 3D since I spend all day in it. But how about we do that then, Model a console? Over say...the weekend for monday?

So it can be anything.
a wii, xbox, playstation, megadrive, Gaming PC (take a look at gaming pc towers), snes, 3DS, gameboy, whatever. As long as it can play games on it.

Actually, I have been kind of MIA for a while. :P Mostly lurking and just posting here and there.

Some days I just wont feel like coming home and working in 3D since I spend all day in it. But how about we do that then, Model a console? Over say...the weekend for monday?

One weekend to model a console or gaming rig? Sure why not. My project list is a little one the heavy side at the moment, but by 00:01 on Saturday morning I'll have a few of them done be ready for this >:3
I really need to get back in to modeling anyway, I have been so out of things pretty badly for quite a few weeks now, maybe this will be what brings me around.

So yeah.... bring it :P

I will regret those words, I know I will... but they still make me look bad ass. >:3

Alright great! So, here's the contest then, no point making a new thread.
CONTEST:
Model, Texture, light and Render a system which plays games.

This can be an Xbox, a Playstation, a Wii, or a more classic/portable take, such as megadrive, snes, gameboy. A computer tower IS allowed. But be aware that it HAS to look like a gaming tower, (see alienware examples).

RULES:
> All models must be a replica of an existing console, NO making it up. This is a test of your detailed creation skills and likeness. Artistic licience should be merited through composition.

> One entry per person, quality over quantity.

> If you want to add accessories such as a cabling, a controller, a wii fit board, a games case then this is encouraged, to give your entry a bit of an edge.

> Icons CAN be referenced. So say you make a game cover, then you can use an image off the net to make it look official. You can use logos off the net, such as the text and icons which would be time consuming themselves to recreate.

> This contest is for self-gain and out of fun. Thats right FUN! Do this to enhance your abilities and just in general interact with the 3D community at Newgrounds.

> Entries can be started as soon as you want, all entries are suggested to be in for Monday 27th June 2011. If you are later than Monday, then you wont be counted in for voting, but we'll still look at your lovely piece of art in the portal! :D Comments, progress and crits are encouraged, show us how you're getting on and we can give feed back to each other.

Alright! Hopefully I havent missed anything. nothing too huge or official, just a bit of fun for us 3D'ers.

lol, look like im the posting progress. Boooooo
:P

So it looks simple but its actually a fairly complex object, im having to use a higher level of geometry to make sure that the intersections between shapes fit seemlessly as well as make sure the modelling will pick up highlights along the edges.

Looking forward to seeing everyone else's progress!

Damn talk about being out of practice. I'm moving as slow as ever. Looks like it'll be a long night for me :P

Going old school :P

I don't even have the top done much less the bottom. I got the a/b button done, have a start on the start and select, and still need to do the D-Pad.... yep :P

Hey guys, how you two getting on? To be honest, I could benefit from another day, I wont have the chance to work on this since I need to put some over my own time into the 3D I have to do for work. So I'll complete this, just probably not today. :'(

Well, seeing as how it's just for fun, I don't see any reason not to allow you some extra time.

Hey its cool man. Like Jonny said, it's just for fun. So yeah take some extra time if you need. Besides From what I've seen, yours is already beating out the rest of us :P.
The reason I decided to do this activity and challenge is because I needed something to goad me back in to 3D. I have been so busy with other things in life that all I have been able to do is sketch and stuff. My 3D abilities were left on a shelf to gather dust and rust.
I'll be looking forward to when you do finish it though.

Thanks Kinsei, I tried to push forward as much as I can, but ive got a ridiculous amount of stuff to do for the 30th. Right now, the bottom of it needs a few modelling touches such as the USB ports and icons on the left, and the rubber feet. Everything else can be missed as it wont be seen. Then I'll texture and light it. Maybe stick it in a basic scene or something. Not sure where though.

I had a few people saying that my last one was a photo and gave me a 0. So the aim is to get more 0's this time. :P

lol At least you got them so say something right?
you should put together a modeling and rendering video some time. It'd be cool to watch.

Too True! :) Yeah, that's a good idea. Maybe when things ease off, I'll take a shot at some modelling/ rendering techniques.

my weakest points are texture, lighting and then render. So any help on those is always a plus.
I have a couple of textbooks over 3D which covers those areas, but I haven't gotten around to going through them.
I think when my own time frees up here in the next few days I'll go through the books cover to cover.

another wip....

Now time for me to stumble through render....

more like stumbling through a minefield... ouch...
eh well it's done.
Perhaps after I get some more studying done over advanced lighting I can come back and do a much better render.
Don't know if I want to put it in the portal or not yet... probably shouldn't

Shit, I just noticed this.
I guess after I cut down the render in Photoshop, and then saved it as a gif it got some bad distortion on some things.
It doesn't make up for the final product looking like crap, but damn I should hhve caught that before posting.
