I too would like an explanation.

I guess it's different if your game is really good and polished.

Thanks! but yeah, without flattering myself too much I guess that what it does come down too. I think submissions under judgement get upvoted a lot cause poeple try to garner save points; poeple that play a game from frontpage might have higher expectations.
On the other hand; poeple that only play frontpaged games might be less willing to look past bugs and stuff and are looking more for a quick thrill than poeple that actually look throught the portal.
Congrats on the daily first and second to The Outsider and Robinson Crusoe, respectively! So glad The Outsider is doing well. It's definitely my favourite of the jam (Crusoe is too fast and difficult, and the opening cutscene gets annoying, imo).
Also, if anyone is interested, we're fixing our Slaughterhouse-Five game. Right now we fixed a bug that let you skip basically most of the game's content. A bunch of stuff is still broken, though, like the end cutscene.
I specifically requested to be notified about when the game jam would be, and I wasn't. Once again, I only found out when games started showing up on the front page. How does everyone else find out about these? I thought the game jams were supposed to be about little known developers being brought into the spotlight, but it looks like you have to already be in the loop to participate.
I got Flash CS4 in case you need something converted to CS3.

They happen usually on the second or third weekend every other month. AustinBreed usually posts on his userpage near the beginning of the month to let everyone know dates, and Tom posts in the news about it a short time later.
TL;DR read the news posts.

How could you *not* notice the game was going on? The news post was made on the front page, Tom mentioned it *several times* in every announcement post. There is no "loop", you just have to keep your eyes open.

Ah yes, I phrased that incorrectly. "If anyone is interested" wasn't meant as an offer.

All right. I don't read all the news posts, but I do come to Newgrounds almost everyday. I looked in the news history and there were only three news posts that gave advanced warning and only one mentioned it in the title and I must have missed that one, as it was titled something else and then "game jam" as an afterthought. If I didn't come to Newgrounds as often as I do, I wouldn't have a chance.
I guess everyone involved has to go reading every single news post.

They occasionally have informative stuff in em youknow; especially if you visit ng daily. Anyway, I had a three week break from ng and still I knew about it...

Next time dude, next time! It is bi monthly so expect it mid-late August!
Austin Breed is the only person who hosts the jams, as far as I'm aware. If you just check his news feed every week or so you'll know.

Oh boo-hoo. You have to go looking for information if you want to find it. Stop pouting, the next one's in August.
Those Game Jam thingys are awesome.
So interesting and artistic masterpieces..
NICE <33
So... when are we going to see the winners? I know I didn't win anything, but I'm guessing that those near the top of the heap may want to know.

It's never really about the score, it could be anyone's game so far.
Also, generally, it's about a week until the results, just to give all the games some exposure.

In previous game jams I joined, this would make me happy...

Dont get that really.. if it isnt about the score but about opinion of judge(s) why would the extra exposure (which is really only given to games that get fp'd, others prolly wont get a lot of extra plays after the first couple of days. (unless they have medals perhaps)) matter?

The exposure is for the games' themselves. Everyone here that finished a game in 72 hours deserves some exposure for their work right? So they give them that, and judge later.
And score really doesn't play a heavy role in judging, you can look back at all the previous game jams for some more evidence.
Are we allowed to make minor updates? There's an error in my team's game which makes it so you don't lose when the force field is destroyed, and I would really like to fix that. Also, add a mute function.

You can add whatever you like. Teams have always added anything from small bug fixes to extra features and medals with no complaints. So no worries there.

This is not entirely true. You can edit them in any way you wish, but if the issue was a glaring one (such as, perhaps, the omission of a STOR), then they will be held against you because it was something that was not fixed in time for the deadline.

No one's ever actually raised such issues for the past 5 game jams, despite glaring fixes and additions.

The point is that waiting a week before announcing the results doesnt give more exposure to the games than when winners are announced earlier. I do agree that all games deserve exposure, but I think the results are only announced after something like a week cause the judging takes time etc.

I never stated otherwise.

I do expect and hope that late fixes will be taken into account in the judgement, even if that isnt stated explicitly.
