June 17-19th
Read about it here.
Submit your finished game here.
You now have until 11:59pm (Central Time GMT -6) on June 19th to create a flash game and submit it to the portal. There were no sign-ups this time, so anyone reading this now is allowed to participate. You will also be allowed to team up with whoever you like in order to finish the game!
THE THEME
For the Newgrounds Game Jam 5, the theme will be "Literature." You must somehow adapt a published work of fiction/non-fiction into a game! Consider classic novels you might have read in High School or this year's bestsellers. (Memoirs are allowed and encouraged, but try to stay away from biographies or history. Just because you can assume a book has been written about The Bay of Pigs, for example, doesn't mean you should make a game about it.) The work must be published and recognized, not something you wrote. If the book has a Wikipedia article, you should be fine.
There have been lots of games developed in the indie community that have been based off of literature, for example The Great Gatsby.
Good luck guys! AND MAKE SURE TO POST SCREENSHOTS IN THIS THREAD!
will there be a way to moderate what books are being chosen to avoid repeats?
I gotta say, this is an excellent theme. Bravo.
Check out my webcomic: The Amazing and Remarkably True Adventures of Kim and Amy
Aigis - Putting the 'ai' back in 'Aigis'.

Just my two cents, but as long as they're reinterpreted I don't see it being a problem?
Also just a helpful link for you guys:
http://www.gutenberg.org/browse/scores/t op
All of these books are public domain, so you can use the content any way you want to.
Word to your mother
Great Theme Austin. Definitely better than the seasonal ones of the first two jams.
This actually comes as a bit of a surprise, as my Team member and I were actually brainstorming games a while ago, and an eight-bit Romeo and Juliet came out as the top contender. Although it's definitely something that should be made in at least three weeks, no three days.
</subtle protection of my awesome idea>
Also, can everyone post their teams here as well. I'd like to know who I'm up against. I'll go first.

Looking forward to it! This theme is great, and is going to take a hell of a lot more planning than the previous game jams. Best of luck to everyone, have a fun weekend :)
GAH!

I agree with this.
Also, here is some inspiration for people who are having trouble getting started:
One and Two.
Oh yeah, forgot to post the preloader! Damn damn, and I had it done early this time.
If someone wants to convert it over to AS3 for the more savvy competitors, you'd be a big help.
Dude! I just stumbled upon this by *accident*..four hours after it was posted. This should seriously be announced somewhere. Why haven't you PMed everyone like you've always done?

Because there were no official signups.
Should've been posted on the front page somehow, though.
Just thought I'd post here as well that if anyone needs a voice actor for their game just contact me! I posted some of my experience in the Lfg thread as well (around the middle of page 2)!
My team's not there yet, so I thought I'd get a warm up/

Neither's mine, so I'm getting kinda bored. Time-zones FTL.
Working till 6pm GMT, hoping my team mates can sort out what book/ the game will be about as I'm the most illiterate person in the world! Only ever read books for school!
Biff Chip and Kipper it is!
First Game Jam I'm taking part in, as a musician.
Can't wait to get started :3.

Has anyone actually decided on a book yet?
That Romeo and Juliet one sounds like it's going to be a cool/funny little game, but we decided to do something of a more serious approach to the adaptation.
But anyway, good luck to everyone!

Too serious? If anything that'd be the funniest game here. Playing with a mini romeo, mario style to reach your juliet.
