Do you consider this type of racing a sport? Granted it very slightly more athletic than "World Series of Poker" but honestly even golf is more tedious than that.
Only credit I would give to racing is that the risk of injuries are high if something happens, such as the incident in the 1970s where some dude got hit while crossing the racetrack so he can help the guy whose car have crashed. When it happened, the fire extinguisher he was carrying broke one of the driver's neck and you know the rest, it was tragic.
Then there's what happened to Dale Earnhart Sr.

Well it's motorsports, so technically it is a sport.
Regardless or not of if we want it to be, they're technically sports.
well when youre going so fuckin fast in a limited area, shits bound to go down.
i really dont see the point of nascar at all.
its a motosport; so its a a "sport" but personally i dont think it should be a sport.
you might as well call web surfing a sport at this rate.
On a technical level, it's considered a sport. Plus, I would think that the drivers would have to be in pretty good shape to drive around a track about 200-500 times without stopping to go to the bathroom, or even to get a drink inside a car with no A/C. But, I'm not so quick on calling them athletes per se, compared to other sports.
Just stop worrying, and love the bomb.

MUCH more athletic than poker. It isn't just sit around and relax. It's a seriously straining sport. Well, F1 that is, not too sure about the others.
They exert a good 3-4g's on themselves around corners. Constantly changing gears (about 65 times per lap) and the reaction time they get between breaking and accelerating are mere milliseconds. There's a reason not everyone can do it, you need to have a very finely tuned brain with painfully quick reaction times, body stamina and mentality.
F1 geek here. Not to mention, the drivers are always hot for some reason.
i only consider formula 1 a sport, other auto competitions: no
formula 1 takes lots of effort to move the steering wheel because of the gravity on the racer is so big he needs to lean with his hands to steer
Yeah i guess, however I'm not a fan so don't expect me to fight tooth and nail on this one.
It may be a sport just not a physical one.
WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO THAT DUDE WITH THE RED HAT BROWN TRENCH COAT AND SHOTGUN?!?! I miss the old ASSASSIN days. Click Me
I watched a ball being kicked around a field. I thought to myself what could possibly be more boring than this, then I saw some cars going in a utterly linear line repeated for 2 hours. Then I realized that was more boring than the ball being kicked.
When this post hits 88 mph, you're going to see some serious friendship.

Those fire suits they wear are super insulated, though it's more of a problem with NASCAR because the cockpit is closed for the most part, It can get up to 140-150F in the NASCAR Cars if it's hot enough outside. But with F1 they seem to always go places where it's 80+ and sometimes muggy, not really the kind of weather you want to wear an insulative fire-retardant suit in.
Certainly debatable but it's much more of a sport than fucking darts or "E-sports" (they need a new name for that shit it's pathetic.) I think so anyway.
There is actually a lot of training required to race...
Well, since the racers have to train their body for this too and have to be fit to bring the needed concentration with, I would consider it a sport, yes.

If driving a car is a sport, then anyone driving to a NASCAR event by logic is an amateur athlete.

You can say that, I remember that dating commercial where a girl remembers dating a dude who plays darts.
The dart thrower ends up killing someone by accident...

Anything competitive that requires physical exertion is a sport. Therefore it counts.

They're not sports, they're racing.
A bunch of men going round and around and around and around in cars is not a sport. It's about as sporty as darts and snooker is.
Motorsports are both physically and mentally exhaustive.

Look at this sportsman, what an athlete. If you can get this big in a "sport" it's not a sport.

Excactly, you shouldn´t underestimate the pressure that is put on you, when you drive, and the amount of needed concentration and fast reaction is pretty uge.

It's hard to believe it's aired on ESPN.

That doesn't change the fact that you're sitting for hours on end.

While this is true, it is surely a difference to sit and do barely anything and to sit and control a car for hours.

You can acctually loase up to 5 pounds during racing in a NASCAR sprint cup race.
Everyone is saying its stupid because it is for hillbillys.... Not really.

Your concentration needs to be at an absolute maximum at all times. That's really tiring to do in such a time period. You get tired, even after 30 minutes.
its not a sport but a motorsport. Same with motorbike racers and derby deathmatch.
