Public or Private Records? 2001-08-21 15:47:00 Reply

Should your posts on this or any other BBS be public or private records after a certain amount of time? Have you ever thought about if what you write on this BBS might come back to haunt you later on in life? Say you were a high public figure ten years from now and you wrote that you smoked crack on this BBS, could the press use this to harm your image? In this new age of electronic trails, are you more aware of what you write or what sites you visit on your spare time? Since I work for the government I am always aware of what I say or do, not that I have anything to hide, but its just the fact that I have to hold up to a higher standard of conduct. I'm not saying I'm any better than the rest of you but what I do and say reflects on the Marine Corps, and I have too much pride in being a Marine to dishonor the corps. But who should own the rights to what you write?

I don't remeber signing an affi-davit after any of these posts... so in a few years I'll just say... " Didn't do it!"

Yeah, you think while I'm standing there, making my speech of victory, after the revolution, someone will shout "Oi you! You were a drunkard when you were 14!"

Things I wrote on the BBS already come back to haunt me. Oi.

The internet is a public place. What you write on the BBS is public knowledge, even if it's not noticeable by most of the public. How many people are on the BBS anyway? It's only a small percentage of NG's traffic, really. Then think of that percentage as comapared to the rest of the Internet.

Somewhere along the line, something we have said or done will come back to bite us in the asses. It's just a matter of what it is and how it comes back. And I'm sure that most older people look back at their years spent between the ages of 13 and 25 and think "Damn, I was such a fucking idiot!"

Freak: I hope I look back on every year until the final one and think I was a fucking idiot. I never want to become conservative.

Shorbe: something one of my college English lit professors said once stuck with me: "If you can't look at yourself one year ago today, and think you were a moron, then you haven't learned anything."

Slizor: You'll be running some red collective in a dingy old shop, with taped up windows and the latest anarchist syndicate newsletter on the front door.

A year ago today: Hadn't discovered any of the truly great things in life: Beer, lesbian make-out sessions, NG... I watched a lot of TV, wasted time at the beginning of college... man was I a moron.

Why am I not surprised at all your responses? Oh well...some things will never change. You can only blame yourself, right?
