Film Portal? 2011-06-11 07:54:45 Reply

Hi there, was wondering, could there possibly be a FILM portal on Newgrounds? I've been visiting the site since I was a wee preteen, and now I'm a FULL teen, and have been enjoying the stuff that's been comin' out of the site. Now there's an Audio and Art Portal to compliment the Flash Portal, but what would really be nice is a Live-Action Film Portal! I'm sure I'm not the first to suggest one, but wouldn't it be neat? Or is that too Youtube? Could it work the same way Flash submissions work? Content must be reviewed before it is presented, that doesn't sound too bad, right?

I understand I'm just a schmuck with an idea, but who else would think that would not only enhance the site but enhance the quality of internet content out there? People could really start looking to this site to find talented filmmakers instead of rummaging through Youtube.

I think that's actually a pretty good idea. I think it would be a great addition to the community. Talk to one of the admins (I think liljim) and maybe he'll think about your idea!

If he doesn't like it, he normally at least gives a few reasons why.

I don't think NG will ever have a dedicated video portal like you described. But there's nothing to stop someone from putting it in a flash format I suppose.

They said a while ago they didn't want this place to become youtube with videos etc, they want it to be a flash site and not hold ideos that could be put elsewhere.

There are many users who do videos on youtube who are onNewgrounds, they can link all their youtube work on here and vise versa. Thats how it should be really, youtube is perfectly made for videos and this site is made for flash. Don't try and make each side take something they aren't as good at when a perfectly fine option already exists.

Tom already mentioned that we intend to have an invitation based video section on the site some time down the road.

In your userpage blog. Add them to your signature also if you want. It's the same as any other submission just not onthe site we don't want to have everyone who submits a flash making a post about it.

Does that mean that only approved people can submit videos there? Would be better to prevent spam videos.

Could be the case, yes, I also waited some time before I joined, although it was only a matter of days for me.

Wasn't that suppose to blast out when the redesign was released? Or, did I read Tom's post wrong and it was simply going to be implemented some time to (supposedly) 11's redesign reign?

I'd love to produce some film material for Newgrounds. It's nothing light-hearted, it's a dream I actually cherish and hold on somewhat. I have my reasons. And my ideas too, those dreadful, dreadful ideas that are poorly executed and have no market value.

I hope any sort of film section comes about in good time, invitation-only sounding like a good way to approach it. YouTube certainly is not optimal in helping new filmmakers. I can say from experience that it simply doesn't happen, because exposure on YouTube comes via completing the objectives that get you featured there. Narrative filming, without a great deal of sponsorship and media sway, doesn't do that now for the long run; it's why young filmmakers are propelled still by exclusive, often elitist, film festivals catering toward them. YouTube has become a becon for, for example, Internet comedians instead for these reasons.

And we all know that films need to be enjoyed on a big screen in a dark room (<3 Pauline Kael). But that's playing Devil's advocate in the case of bringing film to Newgrounds.

To me, it depends on what you consider film. some artsy thrown together stuff can be awesome, but when it's as free as flash portal, any jackrabbit with a cam could submit crap in the film section. It will be like youtube, flooded with self important jerk, thinking they are the shit because they use video to claim their shitfead philosophies on whatever online.

That is what "invitation based" means, yes.

Really? That's actually surprising. Hopefully, the standards are high. Even higher than the art portal. Film takes up a lot of bandwidth, doesn't it?

I heard from a certain admin that it will be happening eventually after the redesign.

Tom said something about a video portal coming with the redesign.

If the videos are made with flash, I don't see why not.
