Different personas? 2011-06-07 01:49:59 Reply

How many different, I guess personas would be the closest word I can think of, do you have? Like online or in real life?

I have quite a few, and I didn't realize this until a friend of mine pointed it out to me.
In real life, when I am around people I don't know very well, or at all, I get really quiet and reserved. I hardly ever say anything, unless its something to be a smart ass, which for some reason comes really natural to me around everyone.

And then around friends, I am way more open and talkative with my closest friends, but my casual, school or work friends, I make a lot less jokes that they might find offensive or make me sound weird. Which I think is natural. But around my closer friends I usually just say whatever without censoring myself because they know I'm joking.

And then online, places like Newgrounds, I am a way nicer guy then I am in real life. And I have no idea why. I think on Newgrounds I act more mature then anywhere else. Which I think seems counter intuitive.
But on facebook, I hardly ever censor myself and am way more open with saying stupid, or mean things, even though 90% of it is joking.

So, how about you guys? Are you different around certain people, or generally the same?

People have as many different personae as they have relationships. No one acts the same way around their girlfriend as they do around their mom. No one is the same when they're around their sibling as when they're around their kids. Our personalities are constantly adapting to the situation we're in.

If you just have you, then I guess this doesnt apply to you, but on the "faking" topic....

Who's to say which "persona" is the fake one, and which is the real you? That a question I am always asking myself when I am act differently amongst different people, at least.

I am pretty much always the same, I see no point in acting different just to appeal more to different groups.

Just me. I'm the same offline as I am online. Frankly the only real difference is that I don't have the luxury of being able to think out what I say to everyone before I say it in real life - my conversations are well, really quick.

It's a luxury people should use more often.

I am the same online and offline, however I am more quiet and shy etc offline as when online I just don't get that shy and stuff.

When playing WoW I role play a bit, I actually have quite a lot of people believing I am a girl which is nice.

I adapt to each situation, if I think I can gather profit from a situation I adapt myself so that I achieve my goal, in 95% it works.

I'm the same bitterly sarcastic, over opinionated, loud mouth jerk offline and on. So I've just got one persona i guess.

I'm kind of an annoying twat on the internet...sort of. Well, actually, I'm just more loud and outgoing on the internet...I'm still more or less the same though. In real life I just kinda don't say much and I'm more shy.
