For me, it's based on what I'm feeling at the moment. Right now, as I type this, I am not feeling any particular emotion with regard to your topic, so I'm refraining from using any emoticon.

I remember frequenting a bbs that required you to add a mood or icon for your thread. SOmetimes I forget to do it here, but I believe it's really useful for newcomers.

I try to make them match up with the thread since I think that is the point of it. If the thread is a rant I will put and angry face and if it is a silly story I will put the blush face or the sunglasses one.
