No music theory 'round here? 2011-05-30 00:02:39 Reply

So i just noticed that around these parts not many people talk about chord progressions much,primarily with the fact that my question a while back about a descending bass progression (btw,it's in one of my newest songs,available as soon as NG approves me) and i havent seen much of anything else music theory related(mind you,i dont stray far from the 1st page of threads) so my question is;

Why not talk about music theory in the audio forums??

Sharing these ideas could open up a thoughtful discussion, and in some cases, even learn from the other person/people.

We're all geniuses in music theory already.

I agree with that thought
But the answer is unfortunately many people either don't think about it or don't care about it
Personally I just don't think about it. But that's not to say no one discusses it I'm sure there are some who do.

Talking about theory is nice but it's the sort of thing that you can't really start a vague conversation about...

"So, how about that music theory? Sure is... something."

An actual music theory query thread like the fruityloops questions thread would be good, though!

p.s. i am gay

I should suppose i should make one then, since even though im still learning quite a bit of music theory, the veterans can help me out with the thread.

There has been im pretty sure. But they get lost.

There used to be a general music theory thread(i think), the jazz master class and that LOOONNNGGG thread someone dedicated a good number of hours to about music theory(cant remember who). But i cant find either.

Music theory is boring. I'm more interested in getting my computer to go BEEP BEEP BOOP as loud as it can.

So... minor chords. What's the deal with that? I mean, they sound all depressing, it is very minor...

minor chords are like major chords, except you flat(or natural,if in a "sharp" key sig.) for example,in the key of C,the basic triad/major chord is C E G. but when its a minor triad, you just flat the middle note of the triad, and it becomes C Eb G. you can do this to all major triads easily.

understand? :)

You could have simply revived it by asking a theory question AKA thread bump.

Tons of people talk about music theory around here! Many threads about it are made and responded to / discussed accordingly. Just look around every now and then, don't think they arent talked about just from a quick search.

I use Wikipedia's articles about music theory and sometimes this site for the info I need. Most if not all of my questions get answered that way ;)

All I can say is, we don't analyze music, we don't have a way on how to have a discourse in music. What we do is to make it, that is playing it and making sure that at least a single soul could be inspired by doing it! :)

It's not that I discourage Learning Music theory of course it's important for it's a building block or foundation of all serious musicians.

The forum is more technical since we apparently are all producers here, plus, the forum really isnt the primary source for theory related questions, for example:

I personally always check around the net for anything related to the problem i have BEFORE i check whit the forum, its kinda everyone's back-up plan.

I made a thread about this a while ago:

It didn't get a lot of replies, but the few who did reply said it was interesting.

You guys use music theory when you produce? I only consider it when playing guitar. Literally all of my production is just experimental. It just works.

I think the main problem is that one half of people are beginners at music theory and others are much more advanced at it

All the music theory threads that I have seen float by have always gotten into some sort of argument somehow, which I have found time after time to be relatively hilarious.

If people make a thread for music theory I'll probably be there - I gotta apply my major field in music somehow. The last one sort of just died, so I wish you the best.
