I'm in Joplin, MO. I survived, my whole family is fine, my house is fine. I made this submission years ago, and I never knew how much it would mean after all these years.

How close are you to the areas which were affected? It'd be interesting to have some insight from a person who was within proximity of the devastation. Got any pics? :P

I don't take pictures of the wrecked parts of town, only hopeful ones.
This one's not mine, but it shows the high school, which is pretty messed up.

F5 tornado. Biggest there is, wind faster than 230 mph. It took out six miles of our town, the town I've lived in my whole life. Only 130 something people dead, and from everything I've seen, it could have been thousands.

I am also from Joplin. Not really in the city limits, but Joplin is the closest city to me and I went there every day for school and pretty much everything else.

Really devastating. Everybody I know is alright though, which is good. A lot of my friends and family lost their homes though. I was cleaning up tree limbs and stuff all yesterday to help them.

While that's understandable, taking pictures of the wrecked part would shed more light on what the true extent of damages were and make people more aware.

I mean people hear the word disaster all the time and just dismiss it, at least with pictures you could raise awareness and show the true extent of the disaster.

Just like if people were shown more pictures of what war really causes they might not be as willing to accept it or to allow their country to engage in it.

But it's good that your safe and wish you and the other people who were affected good luck and peace.

I'm from St. Louis and trust me, we definitely feel your pain. We had the horrible Good Friday tornadoes not too long ago and still haven't fully recovered. I have a few friends who live in Joplin and my dad does insurance for a lot of people down there, so he's going down this week and I'm going with him to do volunteer work. Everything we've seen is just awful, and the picturse are just so saddening.
