I want to make indie games... May. 23rd, 2011 @ 10:12 AM Reply

After having played many indie games that seem to be having much success. I am inspired to make my own... i very large ambition i know. But i thought it can't harm me to give it a shot!

I know im going to have to have to learn a lot of things, but where do i start? Hands-on experience, or learning computer languages?

What do you propose i do to get started?

(As much as you may feel the need to type 'Don't bother' please don't.)

As i said before... whats the harm in trying?

Making Indie games is a dream pretty much everyone has at some point in their life tbh.
And it's a lot of work too. I wanted to do it until I realised the vast, vast amounts of effort you gotta put in. I mean, it's fun and stuff, but it will take years of work.
Just make stuff on Game Maker or Scratch.

Do you have a game idea in mind? Does it offer something new and original or improve on something currently existing? What's the story?

Figure all of that out first, then work on some concept art and a more detailed story.

Don't go into the industry with an idea. Don't think of an idea at all, because nobody will even bother listening to your ideas.
Sorry, but it's just the harsh truth.

Either that, or it has to be really good, but you need to actually have experience on making other games before being able to come up with a good idea. An idea is nothing, experience is everything.

Which is why I'm going to university to study Video Game Development to spend 3 years learning and a year in placement. Should be fun.

i would bet that more then 95 percent of everyone in the world never dream of making an indie game...

Start off small and then when you have practiced your coding and possibly animating skills try and work on a group project. Working with others will help you become more skilled and u will see how other people do it.

nice one, thanks...

It's not going to have a story, but i sort of have the concept. It's going to be freeform, your going to be able to have that freedom that you have in some games which keeps you hooked so you can do what you want to do. But apart from that everything else im working on

Learning ActionScript and making Flash games is a good place to start. It's a relatively simple programming language, and you'll have to move on to more 'serious' languages, but making some Flash games and getting them sponsored will give you some game development experience, as well as some cash.

Remember, Meat Boy, N, Fancy Pants Adventures, Closure and others all started as Flash games. It's a good platform for prototyping and showing your ideas to the world.

Here's some tips all indie devs should follow:

1. Purposefully make the game graphic's shit. Remember, good graphics are an automatic zero for some reason.
2. Hype the shit out of it.
3. Promise updated for your game every other day, then don't go trough with half of them.
4. Take a vacation. Who cares, you've got over $30,000,000 at this point.
