What are languages offered at your school or college? Of course if you're going to college the selection of languages is a lot more vast.

At my high school, they offer Spanish, Mandarin, French, and Latin. Spanish and Mandarin are both very popular, and I've taken Mandarin because I already know some because it's my mom's native language, as well as her family.

At the local JC, of course they offer stuff like Japanese, German, Arabic, and other languages. I'd like to take Japanese. German would be kinda interesting but not as useful. So maybe Latin.

English. I go to a low-budget alternative school.

There are usually 7-10 people who actually show up, split into 2 classes.

Damn it, I miss high school.

If your American and are born even remotley close to the Border, it's obviously Spanish. I don't even see why it's an option anymore. They should just have you learn spanish as a core class. I know I know, they came to OUR country so they have to learn OUR language but still, it's pretty damn obvious that a lot of them, especially in the south, refuse to speak proper English unless they absolutely have to. If more people became bilingual then that would probably ease a lot of tension. As well as keeping you from getting fucked if you buy shit at a flea market ran by Mexicans.

Unfortunately the shitty school im in now only has Spanish and French. In my last school I studied sign language, which officially counts as a foreign language. I miss sign language class. I hate french. French is useless. Just the French. In war.

Lmfao. What part of 7-10 people don't you understand? The people who attend my school are delinquents unworthy of the tax dollars, and only know their mother tongue. A good portion of Canadians already know French anyway, which is the only other language you need here. Why the fuck would you teach a white man Vietnamese?

I thought we were talking about high schools here, to tell you the truth. I mean, basically every university in any major city teaches any remotely important language. I figured that was a given.

Algonquin College teaches English; French; all East Asian languages; many South Asian languages; Russian; Spanish; German; some Nordic languages; some Belkan languages; Greek. Hell, they even have a Latin course. There are many I haven`t mentioned.

Such a pessimistic fool. Look back at your post. You implied the thread was about higher education solely. I responded sarcastically. As I have said, basically all universities have a huge list of languages offered. My High School offered English, French, Arabic, Cantonese, Mandarin and Spanish.

I actually anticipated you were gonna be like OMG ITZ AN ALTERNATIVE SCHOOL YOU DUMBASS!!

but fine I got it. That's pretty lame. And I thought you only needed French in Canada in Quebec and maybe other parts of eastern Canada, unless that's where you live I guess.

Vietnamese isn't that useful and I never mentioned it.

In my high school, we had Spanish and French and I think Latin. That's it. I go to a University now and in my Tech Writing class there's Russian or Ukrainian on the board so I know the spectrum is much broadened.

Nah, but it almost seems as if it deserves repeating.

but fine I got it. That's pretty lame. And I thought you only needed French in Canada in Quebec and maybe other parts of eastern Canada, unless that's where you live I guess.

It is very lame. I relish the day I leave this stupid program. It is such a waste of time, and it is supposed to be for "my benefit". I think they just like to keep all the punks in one place and make sure they stay there for as long as possible. That's one of the reasons I'm planning on moving provinces, to further my education. My friend Scott has been in the program since 10th grade, and has since only achieved 6 credits. He`s 18 now, living on his own with his girl. Child on the way.

Just goes to show how much the School Board really cares about your future.

It is true, French is mostly needed in Quebec. In fact, it`s basically mandatory. However, if I ever wanted to make something of myself I would need French as a second language. FYI, 50% of Canada`s population lives in the Quebec-Windsor corridor (in Eastern Canada).

Vietnamese isn't that useful and I never mentioned it.

Oh, well I didn`t mean to offend you. I used it as a random example.

Wrong. What you wrote was -

surprising facts:

1: america is not all white people

2: high school lol

Both of those don`t apply to me.

to Spilda:

that's chill, I'm surprised your high school offered courses such as Arabic and Cantonese. the fact they offer Cantonese is cool, seeing as it doesn't seem to be taught much in overseas countries.

I understand what you mean. plus, it is indeed silly that French is kinda pushed on you guys even if you're living in Ontario

My high school offered Spanish, French, and German. I wish it had offered more as I have always been interested in learning Latin or Japanese. Maybe someday if I'm fortunate enough I can buy Rosetta Stone

In my high school:
English, French, Dutch, German. Classic languages were Greek and Latin.

At university, you have a whole collection of languages. But a guy i know took Africanistics in Ghant and he's learned to speak swahili and zulu.

When I was ~7 years old and was in Kenya, I got a chance to learn swahili as well in school. Stuff was compulsory; now I've forgotten most of it, sadly :|
