Everyone seems to forget foreign influence.
Mexico would likely assert authority under the guise of peacekeeping, national security and protection for its citizens abroad. Every Mexican immigrant remains a Mexican citizen, which would provide legal justification for incorporation of states with a large Mexican population, such as California and Texas. I doubt that any country would protect Americans from such foreign depredations, since there is such animosity towards America.
China would also be a factor in any dissolution of the Union. China may forcefully seize assets to repay American debt after the dissolution. China might also repay our kindness in the "open door policy" and oppose foreign infiltration of former American territory in exchange for recognition of old American debt. The difference depends on trends within the Communist Party as well as the circumstances of the dissolution.
Canada would also have a stake in the dissolution of the Union, both as our northern neighbor and our biggest trade partner. I cannot predict Canadian intervention, although I expect that Canada would seek stabilization over domination. God bless Canada.
Am I missing anyone?

Okay, well if the USA broke up then some states would have to increase trade or suffer famine then. How is this thread stupid? Just because the answer wouldn't be happy? I am confused. Even if it is impossible or unlikely to happen that is why it is a "what-if".

Yes, because you know what my parents tell me. How many time have you been to my house? I don't think my parents have even said that phrase to be honest.

If this post was made after September 12th it makes me more of a liar.
If the USA dismantled I predict lots of threads asking why the USA dismantled, lots more threads blaming it on a single individual and many, many more threads with hypothetical 'What if the USA didn't dismantle?' type questions.

I think my state would be in pretty good shape.
We are the 10th most populated, so we have a good work force. Assuming we get to keep our military force, we house almost all of the special forces, as well as one of the largest marine corps bases.
Our state's economy is in really good shape compared to that of most states, and we have abundant natural and agricultural resources.

And saying "Canada sucks" would be a bannable offense.
I don't see it happening since it was the whole reason we joined in the first place. But if it did happen, and that's a longshot, i'd be really dissapointed. It would be a lot harder to go places. I wouldn't be in that rich of a state/country either so I might have to cut back.

Ouch, that really hurt. Unfortunately, bullshit was only my minor, so I cannot match your skill in that field. I double majored in American history and political science instead.
America already has regions that are socially and economically defined. New England is an existing sociological construct with precedents for political cooperation stretching back to the United Colonies of New England in 1643. There are still political and social organizations whose scope is New England, which could provide a framework for a common culture. New England also has significant economic bonds; over half a million people commute into Boston everyday, mostly from other parts of New England. Families my be spread throughout New England as well. The circumstances that would force a dissolution of our federal Union would most likely be very dire indeed. It is entirely reasonable to expect the states of New England to band together to face those circumstances, considering their centuries of cooperation and interdependence.
I know that a similar argument can be made for the Old South at least, but I picked New England as my example because I know more about New England than any other region.
If America got dismantled for some reason, I would think that it would be split into different states and territories.
New England would obviously just be the New England states.
The southern states that broke apart from the Union in the 1860's would form a territory which would probably include Kentucky, Maryland and possibly Oklahoma.
The midwestern states would probably be the largest by square miles, forming from Ohio to Kansas and possibly western Montana.
The West would be split between the states that touch the Pacific, and those crammed between the Rockies and Sierra Nevada/Cascades mountain ranges.
And I would imagine that New Jersey would be like North Korea of America, just so we can keep the Jersey Shore cast in there and not leave.
Just stop worrying, and love the bomb.
