The United States is not, in the true sense of the word, a democracy. We have ties of Aristocracy and Democracy in our government. That's why it functions as a domocratic nation and a republic at the same time.
Yes, while the people have the voice, we are governed, or so it is supposed to be, by intellegant people.
Though, that's besides the point. I said that in order for democracy to work, it had to be run by intellegent people. I didn't say anything about giving out IQ tests to vote. Simply put, the nation needs to be more politically "in the know" to make good calls. What you're telling me is that you want to leave that to sixteen year olds who hardly even have their own money, relatively no tax paying history, can't even sign legal documents without the consent of a parent/guardian, and are probably the absolute worst target for demagoguery out of all age groups? It's a recipe for disaster. You're placing power in people that just aren't mature enough yet; people are just getting pissy over their own definition of "mature".
I must lollerskate on this matter.

Yup. That's exactly what I said. Apparently, I said that we should abolish all voting privileges of anyone over the age of 18 and ONLY allow those between 16-18 to vote. Thank you for clarifying what I said.
I'm lost without people to guide me through my own intentions.

What's everyone think?
maybe sixteen.. but uh it's still low I think.

We will ban anybody attempting to circumvent any rule in a way that they obviously feel is remarkably clever and witty.
psst, Joseph the shit you're doing is posibly bannable
Anyways NoHit, how about posting some actual reasons on why you believe you should be able to vote, what all makes a minor equal to an adult?
What makes you think that that average 16 year old is mature enough to vote? You will always have some that are, I'm sure there are a few 5 year olds that are very capable of voting, but you can't change the rule just because there area few exceptional people.

Oh, ok good. For a second there I thought you were blind enough to think that I was saying we should give all the power to that age group.
Oh wait....

i think the voting age should be lowered. Some people say that all people below 18 are idiots, and that it is stupid to give idiots votes, but we give idiots votes anyway, right?
Anyways, the reason a lot of 16 + 17 year olds dont know much about politics, is because they're not allowed to join in it. Give them a vote and a fair few would begin to fidn out about stuff, and thus give them more invaluable experience about the world.
P.S I hope people know what I'm talking about...

I don't think that's the reason a lot of 16 and 17 y/o's don't know much about politics. You don't magically become interested at 18, because you can suddenly vote.

If the voting age was lowered to 16, do you think that the 16 and 17 yeaer olds would be willing to take on the rest of the resposibilities of being a full fledged adult? If not then they aren't ready to vote in my opinion.
But I don't think most 16 17 year olds are responsible enough or mature enough to make an informed decision on who they vote for.

Lower the voting age....hmmm......YES probably to 14 cuz kids already know some politics in elementry skool i was in an elementry school and we learned about politics so its better if its 14 or 15 kids already have the mind to vote and learn too so i think we should lower the voting age to 14 or 15 :)

Word. That kid needs puberty badly. If people are still doing stupid things like that, they shouldn't vote. They need time to mature.

No I don't think 16-17 year olds should be able to vote. I've been into politics since I was 10 and I could beat adults in debates. However, I had no one to relate to and barely do today. Everyone either didn't know anything about the subject or was a brainwashed knee-jerk libral. Some of you said there should be a test for maturity. The problem is there's no way to test maturity, because it is not linked to intelligence. Even though I'm completely capable of voting, a majority of my demographic isn't and I have accepted that.

I don't think 16-17 year olds should be allowed to vote..it just isn't a good idea *I'm 16 and alot of my friends are and I know they're NOT ready to vote!*
~18 is just fine with me.
