But I currently don't have anything to make animation with, but I thought about old fashion animation such as just making a picture in paint over and over again, but that would be a lot of work. I've tried to do it several times in the past, but it didn't work out so well.
How bout you? Do you make animation the old fashion way?
Any advice on whether it's a good idea to do this or if there is a different program to do this.
I used to do that. It's the worst way to animate that I can think of. Most people here use adobe flash. You can download a trial from their website.

I made a downshooter (to shoot my pencil tests) out of some sticks and a webcam.
Where there is a will, there's.. well you'll most likely do whatever you please =D
Good luck, animator!
yeah I tried it once and thought it was good - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4c9T1ee7q mM ( I did this fairly quickly hence its only three seconds long or so) - in the description I kinda of explain how I went about doing it. What I've noticed is that some of animators do there animations traditionally and then will clean it up on the computer because you can draw much better and quicker when hand drawing.
The only problem is you kind of need the right set up, to do it well.
Hey there, I am doing my Diploma In Animation Production as we speak :D we are learning all the ways (but Maya and all the adobe software in much more detail) we have done handdrawen animation and then photographed each frame with the line tester machine, also have used the multiplane camera! :D pretty old but very awesome stuff!
