Indie is a short for Indepedant.

LOL I love how my thread goes from being a way to talk about indie bands and music, To an argument about Being a Hipster, then to What the hell indie means.

Indie=Independent. Simply put, Unsigned, or signed to a much lesser known Label. It isn't a specific Genre because there is a such thing as Indie Rap, Rock, Folk, etc. every genre has it's own form of indie, I like Acoustic Indie because it's unsigned and the bands usually aren't afraid to experiment with their sounds (not to be mistaken by the "Experimental" genre.)

I don't think there really is a definition for indie.
Having an argument about it is basically fighting over weather turquoise is more blue or more green.

But, to contradict what I said before:
Indie bands are more "experimental" bands, because they don't have a label to tell them what to do. And that experimental type of music is a genre in itself, basically making it a "miscellaneous" genre.

Dude... posting a link explainning what and etymological fallacy is, is absolutely not an argument. And Indie still fuckin' means Independant.

The problem with that definition, is that most bands who get the tag "Indie" put on their name have contracts with labels.

And even if you were right, then why would it be called "Indie Rock" instead of "Experimental Rock"?
Which is a legitimate musical subgenre that already exists.

Nah not anymore. That's where it originated from, but I think most people can agree that indie is it's own genre of music. And also to everyone else, liking indie doesn't make you a hipster, it's just a common stereotype, lick my clit.

Indie isn't a genre but I'm just gonna list good music that probably falls into that category anyway.

American Football, Cap'n Jazz, Mew, Mogwai, Lydia and Modest Mouse.

PM BBM and ask him. He's a fucking Indie slut.

I used to be heavily into Indie but I really don't care too much about music now. I'm really out of the loop :(

I'm a metal fan and I find that comment appalling. Indie rock may not be my cup of coffee but I'm willing to give the odd album a chance if it's said to be very good. If you don't like the genre at all, that's fine but you don't have much business here. I'm all ears here and if anyone here has a suggestion for indie rock that stands out extremely well, feel free to recommend.

You should go to the Goner Records forums.

As a dude from Memphis, you should listen to me.

They sell vinyl. You know you want to buy it.

This guy knows what's up.

Also, the genre I listen to exclusively is Twinkle Daddies.

Bullshit, Indie is only used to describe pop/pop-rock that no-one cares about, it has it's own sound and style so yeah it pretty much has become a genre and has been for a very long time.
You wouldn't call Black Metal or Noisegrind indie just because it's underground on independent labels or self-released.

Actually if they are underground they are still considered indie whether YOU like it or not! :D
Indie (Like said before) can describe any Genre of music as long as they are independent and don't rely upon a giant name-brand record label! (and their is also such a thing as Indie Record labels too! :D)
