In the original story, the mermaid dies.
As a kid, I like the happier ending but now the original ending would be preferable.

Congrats, you finally figured out Disney changes things during an adaptation. Yutz.
It was going to be a kids movie all along right? Why would they make her die?

Discussed that a while ago. Just enjoyed pointing out something so that I can destroy people's childhood.
Many things were changed by Disney, I mean Snow White was a bit longer in the original version. The movie just cut all the way to the poisoned apple.

What do you expect? If things do end up all sunshinish and rosy they won't tell it to children. But with this generation I doubt they would care for the sad ending.
I'd prefer that children learn about grim things once in awhile so that they don't think everything is going to turn up Skittles and rainbows all the damn time.
I was disappointed the first time I saw the movie having already been familiar the Hans Christian Anderson poem.
This sig is 100% effective protection from all hexes, curses, evil spirits and bad karma. Guaranteed.

Remember "Bambi" is a coming of age story in which many kids became as traumatized as war orphans, it's that bad.
Even emotionless tykebombs would have problems with it butt hat's how it is. Nowadays it's sunshine and rainbows with a rose-colored glasses.
Snow White granted did have a happy ending but...still the step mother had it coming.
The original ending definitely would have been a better fit for "The Little Mermaid", besides it's implied that she'll go to heaven.

People can deal with anything if you attach a happy ending on to it. So... yeah.
Life is a performance, and the world is full of critics. Give it your all like it's your last show.
You don't even want to know
Hans Christianson wrote some pretty good shit, but they were all pretty dark at the end.
Everything Disney, has a happy ending, I guess I would prefer to see one of the main characters bite the dust.

Sad ending > happy ending anyday of the week.
Gaston wasn't even a canon character to the real story of Beauty and the Beast.
I don't really like The Little Mermaid mainly because it gives the message to girls that they should change who they are if they want to be with the man of their dreams.
I just read a Cracked article about this today, when it comes to adapting any book to animation, for the most part it's going to be for children. In that case, I think what they did was better, because obviously it's a classic now. If I want to see the mermaid die because she refuses to kill the prince, then I'll just read the book.
I would prefer the origonal ending because the disney ending messed my view of it up. I don't know the real ending of the little mermaid very well and when it's mentioned elsewhere it's not the disney one so I don't get the reference.

Disney does a lot of weird stuff. You should check out some of their Nazi toons (Pre-1960). I'd link...but I'm too lazy to.

Come to think of it, it does explains all those plastic surgery craze among other things. As the wise man once said, "Be yourself".

There was a version of Cinderella where she cuts off some of her toes in order to fit it into the glass slipper.

I think that was one of her step sisters.

As with most Americanisms, the movie is changed from the original - they want their own spin put on it, for one reason or another.
For example, U571 shows the Americans capturing the ENIGMA machine. In WWII, it was the British that did that. Why did Hollywood change it? "Becoz America R teh bestests!"
Admit it, even if she was dead you would still hit that.

Gonna' be honest, as a kid I didn't really care much for Disney films. I'd watch them, but thinking about it now I'd much rather see the original story unfold.
I just think it would be hella' funny to the body of a dead mermaid beached by the end of the film.
Atleast then it would probably stop them from producing shitty sequels...
Huh, the first time the sotry was read to me by my literature teacher was when I was in grade 2; I did know the real ending, and it was pretty grim, but yes, Disney should try to teach people that life is not a bed of roses.
Frankly, I'd looove to see at least some character bite the dust (like the other guy said) but then again, it'd lose its purpose if it was for comedy.
In other words, Disney is ignorant and teaches little kids to be ignorant; they'll soon face the real world, and finally be snapped into reality where they will learn that life is not the way Disney portrays it (or atleast, from their movies/shows/stories/whatever).
If noone understood what I just said, this is what I'm saying: Disney sucks.

Most people that have posted pretty much said what I would have. Disney likes to change the stories to make them more kid friendly, but at the same time can give bitter reminders to people on how the world could actually work. They need to do more of that though, than to sugar coat it for kids...that'll just mess them all up if something terrible happens in their lives.

Also quoting this since it just amused me. Got to love those little typos that make it through. :)

Her body dissolved once she jumped into the sea.
No way that would happen.
Anyway I'm going to check out some of other Hans Christian Andersen's work to see what else have been changed by Disney.

why is it these fucking child movies gotta end on such a sad depressing ending that people commit suicide
so much for "and they lived happy ever after THE FUCKING END(Which means no more shit sequels)"
Death cures a fool
I heard Ponyo was also adapted from that story.
