Aah i see, its a comma with a smiling face. A clever allegory for how the proper use of grammar makes sentences infinitely more readable, making the reader more happy as the frustration of dechipering a poorly constructed sentence is not there. I notice the comme has also been given a name, which is a metaphor for how grammatically correct sentences have more personality and originality than incomprehensible ravings written by a nincompoop. Well played sir, well played!!! :D

Aah, youve impressed me yet again Jow, you truly are one of the finest minds to have graced this planet. The picture shows 3 arrows, one arrow points towards a fist (representing violence), but the other two point away from the fist. This of course symblifies that for a given problem a person may encounter, one solution may involve violence, but there are multiple solutions that do not involve any violent actions. This serves as a healthy reminder to the person viewing the picture that they should think carefully before acting in a violent manner, as there are many other roads they can go down.

But, typical of Jows work, there is more than one level to this image. A clever little piece of political commentry that a man less observant than myself would have almost certainly missed. The arrow that points to to the fist, representing the violent solution if you will, is closer to the righ hand side of the image, whereas the two arrows pointing to a nonviolent solution are closer to the left. This is, of course, a criticism of "right winged" political partys such as the Republicans, implying that they are more prone to turn to violence as an answer to their problems than the "left wing" parties such as the Democrats, who in Jows eyes are more likely to think of a peaceful solution that involves no bloodshed. I appluad you sir for your biting political commentry.

Is it possible? Can it be that Ive found a mind greater than Jow? This piece of work is so complex that even I, m4x0, with my years dedicated to analysing the meaning behind pieces of artwork, at first struggled to get my head around it. At first it seems like a typical mess, made by a knuckle dragging neanderthol, a bundle of sticks with the letters "OP" written above them. This of course could be interpreted to mean that the original poster of the thread (OP) is a "faggot" (faggot of course, being a term used to describe a bundle of sticks). I was about to dismiss this as the crude scribblings of a madman, but then it hit me.

The "OP is a faggot" message was simply a facade to keep those less intelligent than myself from uncovering the true meaning. A lesser mind would get this message and never look at the piece of art again, believing that he had "solved" the meaning. The artist was challenging me, seeing if i had the skills to decipher the true meaning. He knew that if my observational skills werent up to scratch i would believe that there was no more to the image than calling me a "Faggot" (A term used to describe homosexuals, although in this context was meant to be derogatory towards myself, who has given up all forms sexual arousal so i could spend all my time analysing art) I take no offense to these aspersions about my sexual preference, as in this context they contribute to the challenging nature of the artwork. Im sure that hitman1993 intended this insult to be ironic, mocking the plebians who use such a lowbrow form of wit, and he knew full well i would know it was so when i discovered the pictures actual purpose.

Anyway, after much analysis i have come to a conclusion. It is an old saying that while one stick by itself can easily be snapped in two by somebody who wishes to do so, many stick bundled together are almost unsnappable, the more sticks the harder they are to break. This is the main premise of the artwork. The bundle, or faggot, represents a community of people. Each stick in the bundle represents a person who by themselfs would be easily "broken" (broken being used as a metaphor for succumbing to the mental hardships of life in general, stress, sadness, financial difficulties, personal loss etc...) but, in the community they are supported by everyone around them, making it much less likely that they will break. In effect, this is a metaphor of a perfect society, where everybody is looking out for each of their fellow men, helping them in times of need. No stick makes the bundle weaker, only stronger, so in this community there is no crime or ill-will, no sticks with intentions to endanger the other sticks for personal gain, no scroungers relying on others to pay for their food and shelter. A utopia for those of good heart.

Then, there is the letters "OP" placed above the image. On the internet this is commonly used as an abreiviation for the Original Poster of a BBS thread. But as im sure you will be able to see, that phrase has no meaning in the context of this fine artwork. In this artwork, the "OP" stands for "Out of Print", a phrase used in the book industry to indicate that no new copies of the book are being printed. These books often become rarer and rarer as time takes its toll on existing copies, and in some cases they dissapear alltogether, never to be read again.

So it is obvious that the genius behind this creation intended it to be a critique on America and what he percieves as a decline in social values. The image states that the aforementioned perfect society (the "faggot") is "Out of Print", in the creators eyes, these societys were commonplace in past years, where everybody would support one another and greed and spite were rare, if not unheard of. But, at some point these societys were declared "Out of Print", crime and poverty spread across the United States and the attitude changed from "Helping your fellow man" to "Each man for himself". The metaphor implies that over time, like the out of print books, the number of these societys is decreasing as they are tarnished by criminals or men of bad intentions and as crime rates increase across the US, there will be none left. At which point does the artist belive the "bundle of sticks" society became out of print? Only he can answer that, as that is where the boundaries of analytical abilitys lie.

Of course, to put the icing on this delicious piece of cake, perhaps the people who assume the picture is just meant to imply that i was a homosexual are exactly the people who cause these societys to vanish. Revelling in the pleasure of an innocent citizen such as my self having libellious claims aimed at him, wanting nothing more than a cheap laugh at the expense of another. They refuse to make the effort and look deeper for the real meaning of the artwork, being content with their fix of moronic, lowbrow humour. Little do they realise the image is criticizing them and their loutish behaviour.

I applaud you for revealing these people to themselves hitman1993. And i congratulate you on this thoughtful, challenging piece of art. Surely if a person was to look at this image and realise that he one of the people causing this decay in our moral values, he will think twice about his actions and try to better himself until he can become a stick in the bundle. Revolutionary.

Im afraid youre no Jow or hitman, where they finely crafted and tweaked their creations to accurately portray many of societys deep rooted problems in a way that shocked but also amused, you have half-heartedly tossed together a slapdash collection of nonsense in a desperate attempt to appear relevant, and to get across your madcap, ill-thought through ambitions and dreams . I noticed you included an image of japanese school girls above the "tree + cow" section of your work, clearly a racist vibe at the way they pronounce "Treacle".

This pieces anti-science agenda worries me as well, with the electron symbol next to a closed wardrobe cleary shows that you belive it should be "kept in the cupboard" a metaphor implying that it should be forgotten about and left like a pair of socks you no longer fit into, whereas the star (which symbolizes the practice of astronomy) is obviously too big to fit in the cupboard, implying that this should remain "out the cupboard", and that it is what we should be looking to for answers rather than traditional science.

Where Jow and hitmans masterpieces gave subtle hints towards the point they were making, your attitude towards modern technology is made so blatantly obvious even a newcomer to art analysis, who had been through a meagre six months of tutoring, could point it out in two, if not one shake of a lambs tail. The old style village at the top of the piece really does put the cheap, sickly icing on this terrible, overcooked nightmare of a cake. You yearn for a return to the simple village life of previous centuries, pushing any form of modern technology away as it you were an amish pensioner. The old style village is placed above the other images, symbolizing your attitude that a return to this sort of life is a priority for you and if other things like wildlife or nature (symbolized by the cow and tree respectively) must be destroyed to achieve this, so be it.

Which brings me back to the japanese schoolgirls, these are on level with, no, slighty above your precious village, showing that these tower above the other images in terms of importance. Despite having mocked their accents with the aforementioned "tree cow" joke, which i find unfunny and deeply offensive for the record, they seem to be of utmost importance to you, a fetish bordering on obsessive, your sick fantasy of filling your village with these poor young ladies becomes apparent. The joke you made about their accent shows a deep lack of respect, so it is evident you want these schoolgirls for nothing other than sexual gratification.

Overall, this is one of the vilest pieces of "art" (although i dare not call it that!) ive had the displeasure of analysing. A racist, mysoginistic rant against the technological advances of the previous century, the perverted fantasys of a man who would have us returned to the dark ages. The psychosis riddled scrawlings of an unbalanced lunatic. I hope to never set eyes on anything as abhorrent in my lifetime, as i have today experienced something i wouldnt wish upon my worst enemy. A canvas full of evil.

I may not be on the same page as m4xo but here is my try.

The entire piece must be broken into three parts. The large, seemingly poorly drawn word "BOOM" is an accurate representation of the crude violence that man holds in his heart. The shakiness of the writing also amplifies the raw emotions of violence as if Shade is upset by all of the violence. The crucifix in the center is a obvious relation to religion but the right horizontal piece is larger, thus indicating his opinion on how he thinks the right is abusing religion for their own agenda with in America. The final point is the map with a long brown road with the small green town of the large path. This represents, with green symbolizing safety and the ability to progress, the power of finding something off of the mainstream, beaten path. An obvious inspiration of Shade's is Robert Frost and his less traveled path. Alone these elements are powerful in their own right, but combined it makes a powerful statement on religious extremist terrorist destroying all of the little things that we hold dear. I would like to thank Shade for providing me with a thought provoking piece that I am proud to hang in my parlor and show to the rest of my fellow art enthusiasts.
