A black dot falls from the heavens. It is replaced by a bright light that illuminates all. The momentary awe of the light is replaced by a burning sensation, growing rapidly in feeling. All at once I feel my entire body shrieking in pain. I open my mouth to let out a cry but I can muster no air to do so with. My head rushes and I beg God for the pain to stop. Then, there is darkness. I rise from my agony to call out for help, but no answer. I stumble around in the darkness, crashing into desks and what seems to be my classmates. I find the door, twist the handle and step out. The smell of death fills the air. The skies rain black water. An ambulance rushes across the road in search of survivors. I open my mouth once more to cry, but the pain is too much and I collapse. As I lay in the doorway, slowly fading away, I look up to the heavens and wonder what man would unleash such horrors on innocent people.
I was inspired to write this after listening to Krzysztof Penderecki's Threnody for the victims of Hiroshima. For the full song go to the following link:
