For example, if I want to compliment my own work because I feel good about it, does that make it wrong? Is it wrong to say "I am definitely proud of my work here" or something close to it? Seriously...Some of you guys get butt-hurt over every little thing I say that might even come across as even showing a LITTLE BIT of pride in my work. I do take pride in my work, but I also take criticism to improve it. Is having even a LITTLE BIT of an ego a bad thing?
Sheesh...SOME people...*stares with an evil eye at 10JD*
Have you ever even posted in the art forum before?
My ego is so big, people don't even dare to post in my thread.
Naw, but seriously, no one does! I'm so lonely and sad :(
I also do not think it is a bad thing to take pride in your work. If you don't, isn't it being kinda masochistic?
"I finally finished a piece! But jeez, I hate it. It sucks! Let me post it on the internet for everyone to see!"
Meh.
There's a difference between having pride in your work and having an inflated ego.
If you are happy with the level of work you can do, but acknowledge that there is still tons of room for improvement, good for you.
If you are happy with the level of work you can do and throw a temper tantrum every time someone says something negative about your work, that's bad.
Paroozed your gallery a bit, and despite the fact that half of the people reviewing your stuff are trolls, they are trolls that are totally right.
Adding to what they've collectively said about improving your anatomy and whatnot, you say you use references and that you want to learn your way, however, if you are making the same mistakes every time, you are not practicing in an effective way.
Practice makes perfect, but if you practicing the wrong things begets bad habits, and it will show.
Lets just take for example the legs, you tend to draw them pretty bendy and facing unnatural angles. You've done this for more than a year now. Learning your way, you haven't learned how the leg works. You can use references fine, but if you don't understand how the legs are put together and how they bend and whatnot, it'll still look off.
Pride usually doesn't leave any room for humility, so while being proud of the work that you've produced is all fine and dandy, yes, having even a modicum of pride in your work tends to interfere with your ability to take critique.
Try to be happy with the work you've produced instead, simply content, even. Simply leaving room for others to comment freely can do wonders.
That's just my experience, though.
Being proud of something you made is obviously not a bad thing, unless that pride is preventing you from improving or taking any form of critique.
Honestly, I'm not often totally happy something I made. I can be proud of the work I put in something or the ideas I have, but I constantly see the flaws in my own work and there are very few pieces with which I'm unquestionably satisfied.
If people are trolling you by giving you overly negative rates and yelling you can't take any form of critique, how annoying they might be, they probably have some kind of point. And dude..
"I won't get butt-hurt or act childish (anymore)" looks like kind of a lie when I see your further reactions. You are being really vain, and yes, you are a mediocre artist that can still improve a lot. When people say you should study regular human anatomy before taking on a specific style.. they're fucking right. I don't see why you'd get so pissed about it.
You know you will never get anywhere if have an inflated ego. I say you sounded a bit like an asshole to me. You should lower down your pride I suppose. Critique and negative comments are the things that makes a great artist man. "Never think your great, don't flaunt it. Don't brag about it. Only have a tiny bit of pride if many people say so. Be humble, not boastful." You will never improve with that bitch of an attitude.
Me too; it's not like I won't take critique or anything. I do get annoyed at little flaws here and there in my work.
I've had a quick glance at what's going on in the comment section of your profile's art section.
I believe that writing "This is a great piece, I think" is somewhat of an invitation for trolls to tell you otherwise.
You may have pride in your work (I definitely do), but pride is unfortunately A-grade troll food.
In my experience having a tiny bit of pride can be alright because I know times where I had no pride nothing would see the light of day.
Really i think it would help if you showed a few friends and ask for their opinions and also if you should post it anywhere on the net or in an art show.
Just remember critiquing is always helpful.
