If you turned a light saber on, faced the laser down and dropped it, would it go all the way through a planet? If so, when it hit the other side of said planet would it have the momentum or ability to cut through the atmosphere and continue into space, or would it flip around and keep cycling through the planet until the planet was erased?
I don't know why this is on my mind.
Pretty sure they only cut through flesh and other soft/easily cuttable materials.
A true wielder of the force doesn't drop his lightsaber, unless he dies. The lightsaber automatically goes inside the handle, from when Ben Kenobi dies. Nothing would happen. If anything, lightsabers would be banned if they existed, thanks to the FBI.
Wow, I know too much.
Not giving a damn, one day at a time. ^_^
From what I understood, they have a switch one holds down to use it. So when you let go, it just turns off...it explains how in the movies whenever it gets knocked out of their hands it turns off, and it could provide a theory when they're throwing the lightsaber like a projectile, they're using the force to hold the button down.
I dunno...what I never understood was how long those things last. I mean, even the sun has a limited fuel source...how does one recharge a lightsaber? Or are we supposed to believe some mythical crystal with some sort of specific electrical current can produce a super-heated beam of light that only stops perfectly after a certain distance to form a blade?
As badass as that weapon is, it's fantasy.

YES, they ARE a fantasy...
Just... don't search for them or anything... you won't find it...
No... there aren't any... um... that's not my lightsaber it's um... my fleshlight, yes... fleshlight...

Reallife lightsabers would be very very very very very long. Light doesn't stop at a few feet.
They're almost real!

I in fact, have 10 of the most powerful lasers that are on sale, you don't need to ask me if I build a rig that points them all to one point.
I have.

I have a gun as I stated before that shoots out a pretty powerful, adjustable beam at the target.
Adjustable in the sense that you can simultaneously adjust the angle of all the lasers.
Not a lightsaber, but hey, it's really awesome at parties.

Lightsabers cannot cut through ANYTHING. For instance, in Episode I, Qui-Gon Jinn had to cut through a door on a Trade Federation Command Ship using his lightsaber, and it was quite difficult. Not an easy task cutting metal with a lightsaber.
And, they would shut off the second you drop them, you have to hold the button down to hold them on you know.

But he DID cut through the metal.

The beam is in fact, blue, the concentration point is VERY bright blue, and I'm not allowed to take out the gun outside of my own home, in fact, I'm legally not allowed to have done what I have done, and I'm planning on getting 10 more lasers and powering up my laser gun even more.
And yes, people freak out, however, it cost a lot of money to buy those lasers, and you are obliged to give at least 3 people a chance to use it, or it will get stolen.

Remember it took quite a while for Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan to cut through a steel hatch in The Phantom Menace. Lightsabers can cut through stuff the size of a human easily, but throwing one into the ground... Not possible.
What if the hilt catches on a rock? And nothing can stop liquid magma. Not even a lightsaber.
3 things, light sabers would need to have safety features involved so that if you're not constantly holding them then they will hut off, second gravity will pull things to the center of the mass, it will not be able to get past the point of the center as it will stop and be pulled equally on all sides, 3 i don't think that the power of a single light saber would be enough to be able to cut the way to the center of lets sa the middle of the earth, hell, i don't think that it would be enough to cut to the center of a meteor, it's just to weak...

I think what would happen is that the lightsaber would eventually touch the Earth's molten core and then it would simply float around. I guess the handle part of the lightsaber would just melt with the lava but the light part would still exist. I know little about the physics of the Earth's core, but it would probably not go down all the way unless someone applied a huge amount of force to it. It would most likely stop in the middle.

They can't cut just through anything. It took them a really long time just to be able to cut through a metal door. Also, the handle is bigger around than the "blade" so how would the handle fit through that smaller hole?

Good to see NG has their thinking caps on. I've rather enjoyed the replies.

i dont wanna nerd it up, but vader clearly throws his saber in the second( fifth) film, it stay on...
No, when the handle touches the ground, the lightsaber can not go any further.

Lets say the lightsaber is like the image below. Judging by just the white area and not the blue light emitting from the lightsaber, it is bigger then the handle. Even if it wasn't wouldn't a lightsaber burn more then just the exact shape of the laser, in other words wouldn't there be some kind of burn effect on the surrounding layers. That would allow the handle to bypass the surface.
Unless I misinterpreted how a lightsaber works.
Also for the argument it would turn off if you dropped it, what if it was a sith's lightsaber, and this sith happened to take off the "safety lock". He's a "evil", I could see it happening.

You didn't nerd it up, you only idiot'd it up. He specifically stated that they must be using the force when they throw the lightsabers in order to keep them on, which is true.

To completely disprove the people that say a lightsaber can cut through anything, Trask Ulgo said, "Your melee weapon is made using a cortosis weave. It's strong enough to stand up against anything, even a lightsaber." So there you have it, a lightsaber cannot cut through anything.

That's only the light coming from the plasma blade. Judging by the models of that hilt, it does stick out more than the blade does.

There is no safety lock on a lightsaber, each lightsaber is handmade by the wielder. Depending on how the sith/jedi made it, it could either be turned on by using the force, or by pushing a button that broke the energy loop within the internal superconductor *. There has not yet been any other way that a lightsaber has been operated, other than the protosabers.
* The internal superconductor was created in order to stop the protosabers from depending on a belt-mounted power supply which only allowed them to be used for a short amount of time before overheating, btw.
There, I really 'nerded' the place up for you guys.
