This is a difference between England and America I have seen.

It seems to me that Patriotism is looked at as a bad thing in the UK. They see it as "nationalism" and view it as arrogance and bragging.

But you have to understand, the history of both countries are very different.

In America, you may be in just the first 5 generations to live here. You hear how it was like in the country your family came from, and how they came to make a better life for yourselves. Hell, most people can trace their ancestry back just a few generations and see how their family helped found the country.

Not just founding the country, but building it. Nothing existed here, infrastructure wise, except for paths made by the Indians.

In just 234 years, we have built an entire country from the ground up. And not just built a country, but built a superpower.

There are more reasons to be patriotic in America, than in Britain. I'm not saying we're better or have accomplished more, but you feel more connected to the country.

I was unaware that being a relatively minor player in the grand scheme of WW2 in the context of the Euro theatre was anything but a small player, and I was also unaware that going to war with a set goal in mind, but then quitting before that goal is achieved and then having what you went there to prevent from happening wasn't a loss.
