If that was the case, the person was inexperienced or acting hastily which means you only need to get the drop on them, which is very easy to do and they will most likely attempt to flee at first sight.

If you have a handgun handy, I'll smash that window, get shot, and bleed on your expensive window frames. Then you only need to fix your windows, not re-purchase half your electronics.

What an ideal scenario. You can get your gun drawn and ready after you hear them smash the window and you can shoot them before they make it in.

You generally don't need to. They take off running the moment they notice someone. This may shock you, but not every criminal is a cold blooded murder who will just blast you away at the first sight. That will only draw more attention to themselves which they do not want.
