How about having to be 18+ to buy some violent video games. I was gonna drive myself to the mall Tuesday and pick up Killzone 3 and I just now remembered that I can't due to age limits. Let me get this straight... I can fucking DRIVE to the mall, but I can't pick up the damn game until I am 18. You are saying that you trust me with a car, a 3000 pound hunk of metal that can go 140 mph, and allow me to have my own life and the life of people around me in my hands and yet I can't decide what videogames I can buy.
One of those seems to have much more responsibility behind it.
Also, how about that in America you have to be 21 to drink and yet you can sign up for the military at 18. That means that they trust that you can decide to choose a dangerous and violent career path, but you don't have a mental capacity to decide that you want to have a beer with a ball game...
What... the... fuck?
For I am and forever shall be... a master ruseman.
Because all jobs in the military consist of danger and violence.

They allow 18 year olds to sign up for the bullet sponge jobs. Three more years and that solider will be responsible enough to decide if you want to drink a few beers with your meal. Gotta protect the children... oh wait...

Hahahaha!
I do not care!
None apply to me!
Except for stuff like AARP and crap like that!!
The sig that I'm wearin? Awesomely made by Skaren!
Also, I like annoying Americans by calling English football "real football" and American football "rugby".-Lost-Chances
The stupid people of the past who structured our entire system are to blame. We should be doing what egypt has been doing all over the world. I'm surprised those dirty pigfuckers can do it but we can't.
By the time you're at least 13 you should be able to do anything that is strictly personal, in my opinion. Even if something is a bad idea and could mess up your life, you should still have the right to do it once you're able to comprehend the facts surrounding it.
This is why I like Australia. Our highest video game rating is 15+ (Though it does receive censorship) We get our learner license at 16 and drinking and military ages are both 18. Though no one listens to any of those rules, I see 14 year olds driving around the street, 13 year olds getting fucking wasted and many people join the military before they hit 18.
Video-game restrictions are made to not let children play without the permission of their parents, thus 18 a brother or sister would be much more easily swayed to buy a video-game than an overprotective parent, and other than that it can cause severe mental problems, especially killzone 3,I mean a kid watching his character stick his thumbs into an enemies eyes and sticking a knife into an eye isn't exactly the best kind of mental development, and alcohol can cause bodily harm if your body hasn't fully developed, not so sure about that one,I guess it's to stop early drivers from thinking about drinking and driving if they can't get it to begin with.
But overall i do believe it's a bit idiotic, but that's the american age restriction government for you.
These guys want to legally fight the power.

Actually, you need to be 17+ to be able to buy M rated games in America, not 18+. That aside, I can certainly understand why you'd say that considering driving is extremely dangerous. I'd say if you're old enough to drive by yourself, you're certainly old enough to buy an M rated game though, although that's just me.

I am 16. Which is old enough to drive, but I am currently not mature enough to make really important decisions... like pick which videogames I want to buy with my money. Damn, it sounds more stupid every time I say it.
what were they thinking?

If you want to address this, it's best done by writing a letter or calling your local congressman's office rather than posting a bawwtastic thread on NG where nothing will ever be done about it.
The drinking age is the most ridiculous, especially comparing to the serving in the war age. Even though you can be 17 I believe to serve in the war. You can also drive a car by yourself at 16, and fly internationally by yourself without your parent's permission on a plane at 18, and rent a hotel, etc.
There's no drinking age or alcohol purchase age (there is, 18, but not enforced) in China, and plenty of other countries like in Europe.

I'm finding out more and more how these days, I'm despising each and every restriction that governments. Obligatory courses in school, having to jump through hoops to get to university, and yes, deciding that someone of a certain age is magically more mature then someone older.
They should know that people only grow old, they don't grow up.
The drinking age on military bases used to be 18, until MADD decided to make a pissy, and it got changed to 21... then legislation was passed to where the base commanders could decide to lower the age if they wanted.
It's gone back and forth, but I know I could drink on base when I was 19, so there you go. I don't know if it was legal or not, but the on post liquor store let us buy beer.
I do think the drinking age should be 18... if you're in the military. Otherwise, fuck off and wait until you are 21.
I thought it was pretty gay to have the drinking age limit at 21, but now that I'm 23 I don't care.

The legal age for sex and the age for watching porn in the UK are rather messed up. You can have sex at the age of 16 but can't watch porn until you're 18. I'd expect it to be the other way round.

but many people don't have the mental capacity that you had when you were 13, some don't reach that maturity level until there 30's.

Actually, an M rated title is 17+.
Yes, some age restrictions are foolish. But, they're mostly in place because most people still at the age of restriction are just as or even MORE foolish. There are no exceptions. I was an idiot when I was under legal drinking age and drinking. I was an idiot when I was first licensed as a driver and ignoring graduated licensing regulations (in MA, you can't have passengers in your car for the first 6 months as a Junior Operator License (JOL) holder).
The point is to protect you from your assumed immaturity and idiocy so you can survive to the point where you aren't as bad at decision-making. And until you're 23-25, studies show that you don't have the same long-term planning and consequences understanding that adults do. That's why these sorts of restrictions are in place.
this is just the man tryin' to keep you down... FIGHT THE MAN!
i know what you mean... i hated not bein 21; i couldn't fuckin do anything, and good point on the whole driving thing... the fact that you can drive but can't buy video games till you are older does not make sense

Besides you can't wait like a year or so for a game?
I am not even gonna wait a week. I just gotta make sure my mom is there when I go to buy it this week. What I am saying is that since I am deemed old enough to drive I don't see why I can't buy any videogame I want on my own. I am still getting the game, just not the day it comes out. I will have to wait three or four days.
My point was that if you are able to drive to the store you should be responsible enough to buy any game you want.

O hell no. 13 year olds don't have the sense to keep private things private in the first place, could you imagine if we gave them booze?

Censorship is much worse than age restrictions. Censorship is the government saying that you're not allowed to view the material at all, regardless of how old you are.

I thought those Aussies were supposed to be manly men. Not little censored children who can't handle a bloody videogame. Tsk tsk tsk, you fellas don't even deserve to have kangaroos.

I'm pushing 22 and I still get ID'd for stuff sometimes. I guess I should take it as a compliment though.

Censorship is good, faggot.
How would you like it if a game store that you went to as a kid was filled with porn and extremely graphic material? If kids saw that, we might have abortions at age 8.
