Something from nothing is still something. The drug lords CREATE the demand and then profit ANY way they can, period. OK, legalize drugs...now, when the farmers of your huge, gov't OK'd farms end up dead what will you do next? The ONLY answer to fixing the problem is no consumption, period. You want to make the money dry up? STOP smoking pot and snorting cocaine and the rest of that mind-numbing crap. Grow up, charve your little goatee, get a job and realize that YOU, yes YOU drug consumer, are the problem, not the gov't keeping drugs illegal. You simply want your little perversion to be legalized so your pathetic activities have merit. I laugh so hard when I hear the potheads proclaiming the value of hemp, you can make shirts, ropes, shampoo, bags etc etc... They have NO interest in SAVING anything except their precious little bag of weed and will use just about any excuse to legitimize it.
But it would unburden the prison system.

Sorry what, I'm high as shit? hehe
They still would tax the tits out of it anyway.
I don't think you understand how supply and demand work, and how illegally obtained narcotics would never be as cheap as legal homegrown

The OP also doesn't understand how overcrowded the prisons are in the U.S. because so many nonviolent offenders were caught smoking weed.

"Prohibition will work great injury to the cause of temperance. It is a species of intemperance within itself, for it goes beyond the bounds of reason in that it attempts to control a man's appetite by legislation, and makes a crime out of things that are not crimes. A Prohibition law strikes a blow at the very principles upon which our government was founded."

Speech, 18 Dec. 1840, to Illinois House of Representatives

There's good money in it, so a lot of people would buy it if it was legal and in stores, and the economy would improve

If the U.S grows its own weed, then the drug lords in Mexico will lose tons of money and become weak. Mexico can have another chance at not being a fail-country!

Or how in quite a few cities/states it costs more for them to actively try to get people to pay the fine that it does for them to just not pay it.

Then again, it can really help the economy. There will be taxes, but that is for national revenue. As for the ruining of the soil, one can diversify the planting. By planting more than one type of plant, there is less of a risk of drying out.
Man, Amsterdam must really piss you the fuck off because its the perfect argument against yours.
Amsterdam: Legal Weed.
"Contrary to most countries policies, the Dutch policy has yielded positive results in the war against drugs. The Netherlands spends more than $150m annually on facilties for addicts, of which about fifty per cent goes to drug addicts."
"The Netherlands has extensive demand reduction programmes, reaching about 90 per cent of the country's 25,000 to 28,000 hard drug users. The number of hard drug addicts has stabilized in the past few years and their average age has risen to 38. The number of drug-related deaths in the country remains the lowest in Europe."

In the long run, it just makes more sense to legalize marijuana. It costs a shitload of money every day to the state and federal governments to keep it illegal.
FUN FACT: A Vietnam veteran was caught selling a small amount of weed in Texas about 2 decades ago, IIRC. He was convicted of the crime and guess what his punishment was....

Wrong. Personally I don't think any drug should be legalized besides weed. But the 'crap' you would buy would be the best available. You don't think people get ripped off from dealers are you kidding me? It would also be regulated and you would be sure that it's safe. I'd feel better buying from a store than a sketchy random guy.
