Being new to guns myself; I'd rather practice plinking around with full metal jackets of 9mm, .38 Special or .22 all day long.

But I'd rather shoot the more devastating .45 ACP or .357 magnum using high grain P+ hollow-points using a handgun from either Glock, Smith & Wesson, Sig Sauer , H&K or FN Herstal.

Six rounds (or 12 - two handguns)of hot ammunition is more than enough to stop a threat.

Choosing to carry a revolvers or a semi-automatic pistol; that is the question though.

Go to your local gun range and practice with all the calibers and types of ammo until you find one you're comfortable with.

I would have to say the .45

It has the stopping power to really take someone down in one shot. A 9mm can go right through someone a let them walk away.

If a .45 hits you, it's taking a chunk of you with it.

the recoil isn't too unreasonable either.

A buddy of mine broke his collar bone firing one of those.

Smaller rounds tend to zip through a target (let's say a robber right now) with little damage to organs. This would allow the target to run away, maybe even finish what they were doing if they have a high tolerance to pain.

Larger rounds often remain inside the target, sending a chunk of flesh out the back, and causing organ damage.

If I was going to choose.....Desert Eagle, but no .50ae, only .357 or .44 mag would make for a semi practical gun if you can handle it.

It is really down to personal preference and what your are using it for.

If target shooting, go with something lighter. The lighter rounds are faster, meaning they reach their target sooner, meaning less drift and drop.

If hunting/military/law enforcement, go with something bigger. Anything over a .45 is completely unnecessary.

Using a Desert Eagle is completely stupid in my opinion. It's big, loud, horrible recoil, and the size of it's round is just redundant. Maybe it's worth it if you are just trying to look badass, but other than that there is no point,

Dude, do you realize how much easier it is to shoot a .357 desert eagle than a revolver right? Their heavy weight makes them recoil less, making for tighter groupings, and its semi auto, so you can fire more, faster. Yes, i realize the whole penis size thing, i own a sig 226 for a reason, ill keep living. You keep attempting to be right.

I wasn't aware you needed a hand cannon for daily living.

You must be related to this man.

My apologies.

My cat is going to tear you a new one.

On a related note, some south american company has manufactured a handgun that shoots shotgun shells. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives has decided it does not count, so I don't know if it can be bought in the US.

Dude, he's from Alabama. Seriously.

Personally, being from Kentucky and going to school in Tennessee, I'm really surprised that I'm not as interested in guns, hunting, and war. Though I am interested in imperialistic things, but that covers war, politics, and civilization. I'm also interested in organized crime.

Wow, that pistol is retarded large. At some point it stopped being a handcannon and became an interpersonal ballistic missile silo.

Also, anything larger than .357 is unnecessary. You're trying to stop an assailant, not erase him/(her?) from existence.

In my country you have to be a member of a club and jump through a thousand hoops to get a .38

Other than that, anything we might possibly be able to use to hurt anyone else is on our gigantic list of prohibited "weapons."

Then i saw you lived in Alabama.
