My "opinion" of Ray William Johnson

First off, I did read the post for RWJ, but seeing as this is a special case, I needed to know what people think of my take towards him. Please note that this is just an "opinion" and i'm sure he has big fan base, but i'm not in any way insulting the quality of his videos. However, the way he goes about making these videos is truly disguising.

Ray "reviews" viral videos which have made a big number of views on the internet. The problem that I see first is the word review. When you review a movie, you never show the entire film or spoil the ending. Reviewing a small clip that is 10 seconds long, there's almost no way of reviewing it without showing the entire clip. The point is, you show the entire clip and if you showed an entire movie in a review, there would be no reason to see the movie in theaters.

I also appreciate what Ray is doing, his channel is like a viral current events, but at the same time; he steals a lot of views from the original owner of the video. Now if he would get permission from the owner of the clips, I wouldn't see any problem with that, but he never even bothers to ask anyone. Ray is simply stealing content from other people, and submitting them in his videos (with also a comedy routine which I could care less about). Also realize that Ray is making tons and tons of cash, and most of the work isn't even his. Isn't that just disguising?

Now if I was in Ray's place, I would not show the clip at all. That's right, instead I would give the link to watch it yourself, and also I would say something very brief about it. If Ray was a flash artist, he could remake the videos in a flash format and then watch the real video from the link. I know that might sound dumb, and maybe he would not get that many satisfied viewers; but let's face it, most of his fans are dimwits, rather not even have them as fans at all.

If you make a funny video on the internet, people shouldn't be making money off your stuff. That's what we call copyright buddy, and if you ever have a video stolen from Ray, I would advise everyone to file a copyright claim and get his video taken down. It has happened once, and I'm very positive it'll happen more then once. Sure it won't effect his account being that he's an elite partner, but he won't be making money off of you or your video.

I would like to thank you for taking the time to read this, and I'm very much interested to see what opinions you have, most people would be sick of Ray (being that he's very infamous) but if you have some anger and need to rant on Ray; let the truth set you free! Get your opinions about him on here, and you all have a nice night.

Anyone remember the cute video of the fox licking that window? After rwj reviewed it the video was ripped and uploaded almost 26 times! Same exact vid, it just got uploaded by different assholes. I would feel sorry for the owner of that video :'( that's a cruel way to steal someone's views. Big people on newgrounds have their videos ripped all the time and put on youtube.

I did read your entire response. I read your little thing about copyright and I would like to counter that with the "fair use" clause. It's something reviewers use so they review others material. You have people like the Nostalgia Critic who reviews movies and gives away their endings mainly to make funny videos without permission from the people who have made the movies he's reviewed.

When you review something and show it in your show you don't need permission to do so. It's called "fair use" that's it.

Now I'm done with this thread, I tried to find an understanding in it, but you're just being an asshole.

Since i'm about to go to bed, i'll answer your question. read the second paragraph. if videogame reviewers showed the ending all the games they're reviewing, people wouldn't want to play them anymore. If they reviewed a movie and showed the ending, they wouldn't want to watch them anymore. He's spoiling the content he's reviewing and making people not want to watch the original videos. so basically he's stealing views, do you understand now?

you don't understand what "fair use" is. that might apply to games, but certainly not video content you got from someone without permission. do some research, come back, and maybe start a debate with me big boy :3

Ray has no real punishment for doing what he does, so for the time being he can freely steal whatever he wants off of anyone and make money off their videos. It's insane, and I hope they do something about it because it really does make me mad >:(

Ok. Well I think I have the same opinion about him. Even though I enjoyed his video of an Asian Girls who smashed his boyfriends play station. Hahaha Then I got to check his other videos as well. As I checked some videos I also reached that realization, Wait He's just getting viral videos and put some brief comments on it. Some comments are not funny though and many times I don't get the humor.

At first I'm just the one who thinks about it, until I bumped into this thread.
In a gist this is his formula:

Viral Video + Brief Comments + Some Comedy Stints = Cash Gamble!!!

If you just think about it. What Ray William Johnson's doing is nothing new. We can see a lot of Guys who does this also. I mean people are having a profit because of the things some people don't know. eg. When I was a kid we used to pay a technician just to clean our VHS player. We pay him because my Father who is an Electrical Engineer Doesn't know how to clean a VHS player. Another one would be a man who has a car who happens to be a doctor and doesn't know anything about auto mobiles. What he will do is go straight to a shop and let the mechanic do the task he doesn't know.

Anyhow there is a way to go with this kind of things. I just remember what we did so that we doesn't have to pay a technician every time our VHS needs some cleaning. My Father gave me an instruction, I am to watch the technician and figure out how he clean the head of our VHS player. Now with all my energy I focused my juvenile eyes in what the technician is doing. Then I waited until my Father got home from the office. I succeeded on remembering all the details, after some questioning from my Father, we got all the necessary steps on how to clean the VHS. TAH DAH!!! We don't need to pay $10 just for cleaning it.

If you don't want to pay for something you don't know, you have to learn it! What ever it takes. :)

Hold on, I want to get something straight Kadian. In no way, shape, or form did I say I hated Ray personally or the success he gets from his videos. If you read the response in its entirety, you probably would have caught on to that. Before you stamp a thread as "jelly" or "jealous", please read all the valid points. Yes that's right, you'll actually have to read.

Most times out of ten when you insult a famous person, most responses will come off as jealous of their success (stigma). Kadian, I understand your mad, but it's an opinion for christ sake. At least back up your accusation, I'd love to hear your reasoning behind this.

Ray's popularity from viral videos has destroyed views from those viral videos, which he is intending to make popular. He's leaching off humor from regular people, and making money. I really don't know how many times I have to say that, but i'm sure there's someone out there that doesn't understand (or is such a big fan they ignore all reasoning).

It's a copyright slapping you right in the face, and most people just let it slide (because of his fame). It's like if you pull his video down, people will send you hate mail and respond negatively. You shouldn't be afraid to express your own opinion, and put Ray in his place. Also, I've said before I enjoy watching some of his videos, but still I find it wrong what he's doing. But to say i'm jealous with no real reasoning is pretty pathetic.

If someone wants to see this video, he'll look it up in youtube before having to search inbetween ray's videos. In fact, he probably gives lots of views to videos that would otherwise be pretty obscure by publicizing them.

Fair use does apply to reviews of movies, especially viral videos that were never copyrighted.

Kind of hard to commit copyright infringement off of non copyrighted things

People go to Ray to watch viral videos in general. He's gives a link to the original owner, but after seeing the clip in his video, no one would even bother to visit them. So the links are helpful, but still are pretty useless. Failblog does the very same thing, and making a video about their video doesn't bump up the original owner's views. It just bumps up Ray and Failblog's views. Publicizing the clips just steals views, and in some occasions, the video may be ripped and posted by different users..
