3.80 / 5.00 4,200 ViewsSo recently I started playing World of Warcraft. As a complete n00b to the game I gave my first character the name I usually use: BlackmarketK. After playing for a few hours I thought; maybe I should change my characters name to something more Warcrafty, like; Kagnus or Tunus or some shit (going off of a WoW name generator here, but you get the idea).
So I check out what it takes to change a characters name in WoW and I learn that it costs ten bucks to change one characters name once! Holy shit! So not only do you have to buy the base game, pay a subscription for month to month use, optionally buy expansions and pets, you have pay $10 to change a characters name. Damn Blizzard, you are a dirty money whore.
Have you ever come across a service for a game that, you think, is ridiculous that they charge for? Do share.

That 10 bucks helps keep the World of Warcraft service running, just like subscription fees and Server changes. I'd say that is reasonable so they can keep providing such a service to their customers.

Because it's so reasonable compared to the subscription fees to keep Counter-Strike going.
Oh wait.

While I agree that putting a fee on it is a good idea to keep them running, but $10 is a bit much, IMO.
Reasonable idea, not a reasonable price.
That's why Blizzard is for Cellar Kids only.

Counter-Strike isn't an MMO yo.
The server owners keep Counter-Strike going, not Valve, because without servers to play on, there's no players.
Oh wait.
it should be $2 to change your name on WoW

I think that they rake in enough off of the other fees and services that millions of people are paying. Ideally, the sale of the game should be enough to cover development, the monthly fees should be enough to cover server maintenance and upgrades. I can get behind charging for things that affect your game experience and require additional development like in game pets and expansions. I just don't get how changing the name of one character one time can possibly be valued at $10 USD.
World of Warcraft is already phenomenally successful, they can maintain their servers just fine without gouging their customers.

yeah an i love it
I think it's fair compared to how, in other games that I know of, there's absolutely no way to change your name save for creating a new character, and with that you lose all your levels and whatever else you gain by playing.

It's probably there to deter you from changing your username, so you'd stick with one in-game 'identity'. But yeah, $10 is quite a lot.
Does no one else realize that they charge $10 to KEEP people from changing their names? They only reluctantly added the feature after fans demanded it, and the idea is to make changing your name a big deal - that way people don't go around changing their name every day, because of the problems that would be caused by that. Imagine if every douchebag who goes around starting shit in your guild-chat could just change his name and weasel his way back in when he gets kicked out, to give but one example.

Because you already paid 50 (or 60) dollars for their game, you should actually get the fucking game. It's understandable for a map pack to come out in 2 years or so, because people are sick of the old maps, but in this case, they already made the maps, they just feel that they can get more money if they release it separately. Like how Blizzard already planned expansions for Diablo 3. What the fuck? They should just include it in the fucking game, or at least wait until the game is successful or not to start working on them.
This is why you make sure you like it before you click "go". It also cost money to change servers and factions. Make sure you really like everything about your character before you decide to launch.

It's all the more reason to not choose a crappy name. People look at those, and I for one would not like to have to see "supersonicmariofan39745" in the chat box.
