I like Nintendo and Square-Enix for a number of things they've done, together, but it seems that if it's not RPG related like Super Mario RPG or Final Fantasy, it's a production that joins the "The Spirits Within" hall of shame.
The game looks like fun, doesn't even look like it was developed outside of Nintendo HQ (aside from maybe the FMVs appearing to have a KH-like feel to them), but these reviews sound like a repeat of what went down with Final Fantasy XIV, which hasn't even gotten to consoles yet, afaik.
The economy must be REAL bad if a "kiddie" company is giving a controversial corporation that ate up two other mature, catchy, and well-known game makers, a greenlight to make a game for them, let alone a sports one!
Probably would've been a piece of cake if S-E had stuck with sports that their own characters had experienced, like snowboarding, motorcycling, and BLITZBALL (though Mario and crew may need aqua-lungs considering previous experiences with water like Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine, lol; didn't have that problem with Super Mario World, but I think 2D might've ticked off critics/fans even more, who knows?).
I know I can't speak for everyone, but I think everyone on the Nintendo and Square-Enix fronts will feel well compensated when they are [officially] allowed to play as Cloud (or other well known S-E chars) in the next Super Smash Bros. game!
Well, I think Nintendo is going too over the top making all these Mario spin-offs... But for what audience are they aiming? They're making this games for casual gamers, mostly young kid I think, so if the game is not really "deep" and stuff, that's not really a problem... And the game actually looks like you can have a few hours of fun with it :)

Well Square is making quite a number of mistakes lately so i'm not surprised.
I wonder why Nintendo had Square take on a spinoff game. I mean, I didn't fall head over heels for Super Mario RPG like most others, but I'd rather they team up again for a sequel to that. Square making a sports game that doesn't involve any of their characters sounds like Bungie tackling the Legend of Zelda.
Square is only in it for the money these days anyway, so why shovelware?
I usually frequent the VG and collaboration Forums. If you find me anywhere else, I'm lost and can't find my way back.

And this would be bad because?
Square Enix slowly started dieing after FF10 (you could argue after 7 but 10 was considered to be good by the fans). They moved on to shitty Korean-style MMOs and started doing dumbass sequels.
They worked really well with nintendo but understandably wanted to branch out to a non-retarded company when they heard the N64 wasn't going to use CDs.
Anyway, this is weird. A Square-Nintendo game... thats NOT an RPG. This spells disaster but, we'll see.
It is ok to make fun of America. But if you make fun of any other country in a vague or joking way you get banned.

I just stopped reading there. No words can describe how this statement makes me gag.
Square-Enix has been going down the drain since X, as said before. Square-Enix is allowed to create games for anyone because they're, y'know, a THIRD PARTY COMPANY. That said, if a large-scale Japanese game company offered you lots of money to make a crappy sports game, it'd be kinda dumb to NOT accept it, economically speaking. And with much milking they've done to Final Fantasy AND Kingdom Hearts, this should come as no surprise that this one wouldn't be great. To me Hudson was the only company that made the best Mario sports games, and now they're dead.
Nintendo's not one to have a whole lot of support from third party companies. Shocking. It's been like that since the N64. And in the economy where "kiddie" games appeal to non-gamers (which by the way far exceeds the amount of "hardcore" gamers), well, all that means to Nintendo is "CA-CHING!" and people crying a river about casuals in the market. And we don't even have a PC elitist in the thread yet!
I don't see the problem OP. Those games are pretty fun, and

What the fuck does that mean? Ate up which corporations? You mean Eidos and Crystal?

Oh my god.
SE seems to be more about graphics and confusing ass stories rather than bringing out "new" games.
(FF-13's gameplay srsly reminds me of Xenosaga)
And FF-14, just wtf was that lol
Versus and XIII-2 look fantastic though

Well, on the other hand, Dragon Quest IX is ten times better than Final Fantasy 14. DQX is coming up next. It appears that the only thing they are good at is Dragon Quest!
I still like Riven Riven Riven Riven Riven Riven Riven Riven Riven Riven Riven Riven!

That's the thing, d00d,Super Mario Strikers was fun (in fact I think that was the last game I played at my local Toys 'R' Us before it closed u_u), though that wasn't made by Square-Enix. I'm sure that the actual gamers will most likely see the game in a different light.

Crystal? I mean Eidos and Taito Corporation (hence the term "catchy".) I mean Lara Croft and Space Invaders are now found inside the belly of the RPG beast, named Square-Enix.
Oh my god.
Ok, perhaps that was a lame idea, M-A, but don't come cryin' to me if the game is as bad as the critics claim, or worse. When I really think about it, a good number of companies other than S-E are also in deep poodoo with whole franchises getting killed. Anyways, it just didn't seem right that S-E appears that it couldn't even handle a Mario sports game. If the sales tank, after this thing's released, Nintendo may not even trust S-E to make even another Crystal Chronicles for them, and that's a huge deal right there, not to say they'd go that far.

If it's got Mario in the title, it's going to sale like wildfire regardless if it's bad or not. Some people even enjoy games everyone knows is terrible. I still play Shadow the Hedgehog. Shamelessly. And you have to look at the whole picture instead of a narrow-as-heck point of view you're seeing. Although Square Enix IS going down the crapper, they have more than one franchise. Making one bad Mario game isn't going to change the fact that Squeenix exists, or its ties with Nintendo. And Square Enix can easily make a Crystal Chronicles as long as they pay Nintendo. Nintendo has utterly nothing to do what a third party company does until they say "OK, publish on our system because you paid us good money." Just look at the crap that's put on the Wii. It goes to show Nintendo's Seal of Approval is flimsy enough for Square Enix to put up any game on it.
And sales aren't going to tank. Because it's Mario, and people think it'll be "automatically good." Nintendo knows that anything with the proper face on it will sell. Kirby's Epic Yarn wasn't even a Kirby game at one time. They slapped Kirby in and boom, instant sales.

You are saying that you would rather Square to produce many games rather than work on them?
So you want Square to be like Activision and release a new Call of Duty Game every year.
So fuckin' stupid...
It took them over half a decade to make what in my opinion was one of the worse titles (not worst.) of the FF series. So...it's not the amount of time that goes into it rather than who are in charge of the creation of the games. You could spend 1 year of 6 years making a stick figure, but nevertheless it's still going to be a stick figure.
In case you haven't noticed I'm very pessimistic towards the direction of S-E and modern games made by big publishers. That doesn't include independant game developers and small game publishers, as many of the best titles come from the darkest corners. (Ex. World of Goo, Cave Story, Super Meat Boy, etc.)
I have very bad feelings about the game, but as previously stated, people are still going to buy it thinking it's going to be the best simply since it's mario just the same as people exclusively buying Apple since it's been believed that anything produced by Apple is teh pinnacle of electronic technology. Not like touch screens weren't invented over 5 years ago (or more).
I put the BS in BBS.
