Nihilists vs athesits 2011-02-04 01:31:33 Reply

I have quite a few friends who are basically into "Nihilism" and surprisingly most of them hate atheism even more than Theism (I'm Christian but we get along great surprisingly lol). My first reaction being "what...?" But I guess they just have a general disdain for the way most atheists portray themselves, I myself find this extremily ironic (btw I have no quam with either group everyone has right to choose). Just wondering if there are any nihilists out there who feel the same or even can kinda explain the difference between the two groups, I mean I know a little but not a whole lot.

First off, you're confusing terms. Nihilism is a school of thought about human condition, while atheism is a belief system rejecting organized religion. So it's impossible to compare the two; they are in two separate groups.

Being a classic nihilist by definition makes you an Atheist, nihilism believes there is no meaning what so ever to life. On the other hand, there are certainly atheists, who, while not believing in a spiritual being, do think there is a point to life.

To put it simply, all Nihilists are Atheists, but not all Atheists are Nihilists.

Nihilism is basically anti-life. anti-happiness, anti-fun, anti-learning, clincal depression for life, etc.

Atheism is that we arent completely sure how the universe got there, but we have some good theories. evolution, science, and more science. everything is depended on science and what we can prove with the scientific method about how the world works. Theres no god.

Ok thanks, yeah I think you nailed it on the head because there is definatily a big difference from how I've seen the two groups react at least from what I have seen lol.

No. Wrong. Nihilism is a system of belief that there is no meaning because it is impossible to communicate with others one's true ideas. Remember, nihilism is very much a branch of absurdism, just taken to a much further degree in which understanding the universe around us is impossible.

which is exactly what i described in my post.

theres no point in life, and that we shouldnt even try because its impossible.

yeah. why dont we just fucking give up and sit around and do nothing, because nothing matters and we will never accomplish anything.

It's not that we shouldn't try, nihilism is about trying to convey a feeling to other people which is impossible.

For example, right now, I'm eating a strawberry. It's sweet. Now, what that means to you is something completely different than what it means to me. You may think of a candy bar sweet. I may think of a honey sweet.

Now imagine that about over a grand scale. What we do personally every day has completely different effects on different people, so trying to explain it and understand life is impossible. There's nothing. Our realities are completely different.

Meh, that's all just basically politics.

I cannot believe the gods are playing dice with the universe.
