This contest was only for fun guys!
If you made your entry for the soul purpose of winning then you clearly missed the point of this entirely!
Sure the whole "oldschool" criteria was a little overweighed but this was a contest to learn from!
There maybe were some mistakes from the judges but they are still trying to conceive the perfect formula for the perfect NAC! They're the ones who created this contest! Without them, you wouldn't of had the joy of creating these awesome submissions!
I think the most rewarding aspect of this contest was the fact that it was FUN to make these submissions!
If anyone else whine's about this contest I will shoot them.
Was it fun to make these songs, it was!
Just be happy for those who made it to the top 8!
Amen. For me personally, it was fun to listen to the submissions. I had some favorites of my own too that I wanted to pass but could not because they didn't meet criteria. In the end, it comes down to not only my own votes, but the votes of the other sweep-judges that determine who makes it into the final 8.
The ball is now in the finalists judges' court...

what this man said.
these contests are to help you come out of your shells and try new things. The criteria are rigid becasue we want to see if you can follow rules - it's like being a sprinter and running the opposite way but saying "hey I still finished thats all that matters" - no it's not - rules and criteria have to be followed.
Sadly we actually had to disqualify some entries simply because they didn't conform to the criteria.

Great in theory but in execution, all this ends up doing is making a contest with way too strict/too many guidelines and rules. Musicians hate rules man. We're goddamn musicians
but what do you guys care, it's your contest, your prerogative. carry on and don't take any criticism.
Don't be surprised though if all the entries suck in all your little because you pissed off all the musicians who might have participated.

I'm criticizing the way the contest was set up. Take it at face value. Or accuse me of being butthurt. I don't care.
I'm overall glad I participated and am excited for whoever wins the contest. I also thanks the judges for their timely decisions. I hope they will consider reformatting the contest

I can say I honestly didn't expect to make it in. I made the song before really noticing the contest and after listening over it it seemed like it at least fit partially. It probably would of been better with more old school sounds but I'm fine with the turn out. The other tracks are all really good and I hope for the best for the finalists. I'll make sure to step up to the challenge next month, I could really use some challenges to get me some motivation.

That, good sir, is an excellent attitude.
Perhaps my comment(s) were... brash. Not intended to be sour (I, too, did not expect to do well (fucking Reason)), I wish the top 8 the best of luck! Excellent submissions!

heh.. glad to see a change of attitude. We should all be happy for the finalists, and leave our reservations at the door :)
also March NAC has been decided - just getting approval from Tom.

Your example songs completely conflicted with your main restrictions. and your 3 paragraphs of bonus restrictions might have well have been called mandatory. That kind of stuff is infuriating when I'm trying to participate and be a good sport and compose a song staying under the guidelines.
Hopefully you take a cue from the responses in the thread and make the next contest a little less restrictive. More concise guidelines, maybe a nice bulleted list. Maybe even just a single sentence outlining what the guidelines to the contest were.
but it isn't my contest. and no one is asking you, the all mighty chronamut, to take constructive criticism. You ARE the biggest audio community member in the history of forever, and with that comes a big ego.
anyways, peace brother, and thanks for the fun contest.

Ahem, so throw fair judgement out of the window, calamaistr 'whined about every single thing ever' so disregard his submission.

I do :P
YOU HAVE TO WAIT SIR.
also I asked tom about doubling up the prize money if we only had one NAC in a month.. but he said this:
"At 1 hour ago, TomFulp wrote: We should probably just keep the prize pool static, so if there is only one contest in a month, it is the traditional prize pool and not double. Two contests could only be when there is really a need for two at one time.
I'll keep you posted if any specific themes come up!"
also this month's NAC has been approved:
in the spirit of st. patties day:
CELTIC/IRISH/MEDEIVAL THEME!
think old, think bold, think lutey, think drunken irish themes and jigs and tavern songs and flutes and leprechauns and all that other wonderful crap!
official thread to come later today

yeah you know it- go nuts. Noone is gonna accuse us of making the theme this month hard to understand.
Just remember though - a loreena mckinnit quality song with real instruments and vocals would def. trump say some drunken bard song that sounds like it was made from a midi haha :P

I will try to submit the results of the feb. NAC tonight - however our stand in judge, Dj-Draconum still hasn't sent me his results so I am going to try to hold out for as long as I can and only post the results tomorrow if he doesn't pull through. That's the problem with judges, free will and all.
