I know I'm 10 mins late, but it was down to just uploading to NG (I forgot I needed an icon and to write something...), the actual song was done and exported all on time. Will I still be entered in to the competition?
Either way, I'm so glad to have finally entered another of these! :D

The judges will now commence judging - a few paragraphs of a review for each and a score out of 10 - decimals allowed.
.1 bonus for epic star-ocean-like space theme
.2 bonus for complexity
.3 bonus for old school arcadeness
our judging criteria is basically how well it captures the spirit of our childhood of oldschool space games
we will keep you posted - congrats guys for making it into the top 8!
As for the others - I would just like to say that there were a couple of others I would have loved to see in the top 8 - but in the end we couldnt choose you all! :)
thanks for participating - it was fun to listen to them all!
LET ZE JUDGING BEGIN!!

I was wondering, what made the other songs not good enough for the final 8?
Were they really not space or videogame enough? Just curious =]
Once again, congrats to the final 8! they're all cool =D
Wait, you and Bjra didn't make it in? I thought you two would be shoe-ins! I don't see how I made it, seeing as I didn't take it seriously at all haha.
Nevertheless, I say good luck to all the other contestants! This oughta be good >:)

ok never mind on the spacewalz i listened to it again and apparently the composer changed it, before it was incredibly reverbed and didnt sound anywhere near gameboy wich is why i was just flabbergasted about him even being in but now i think its well deserved as it sounds accurate now.
However, most of the tracks i hear are really, really, really dull. Technically they might be there but come on.. is that the best people can think of? Its like people here just made bad club with chip instrumentation.
Just wondering if you guys even listened to my submission???
I know it was short but i deserve to know what people think of it and why dont i?
Ive gone out of my way on it.

Normally I would discourage such narcissism, but he makes a valid point. His entry was spectacular, and more than appropriate for a space theme. It's got bonus points written all over it!
I understand this is a contest, and making the time to enter is solely one's responsibility, but are we not deserving of valid reviews? How do we grow as artists (all looking for jobs, mind you) if when presented with a commissioned work, we get no constructive criticism?

Truthfully, I believe Bjra's submission was the best. Hands down. I'm absolutely stunned and baffled as to why he didn't get in.

Welcome to the world of underground audio contests ladies and gentlemen. Rarely are the judges qualified, and rarely do they have time to properly assess entries anyhow. Not to mention, a lot of audio contests are judged based on artistic and/or undefinable circumstances; many times abstract and opinionated.
In retrospect, narcissistic quarries are best kept to yourself even if based on logical means, unless they are to better further competitions.
My 2 cents

I'll take it. I'm much more of a N64 guy than a classic chiptune kind of guy.
I made my song, no regrets.

Im not a judge in this competition. I really wanted to compete but due to other projects i simply did not have the time to complete my piece.
But since I'm like 1,000 years old i was around for the atari, nintendo, turbo graphix 16, dreamcast, super nintendo, N64 and i spent TONS of money pumping quarters into arcade games as a youngster in the 80's. ----Remember when video games were 25 cents to play? Now its like 4.00 :(
So i feel i shouldn't let my experiences with this genre (oldschool space theme) go to waste.
So if you would like your piece reviewed by me please send me a PM with a link to your song.
I can't promise that the review will come quickly. Lately i have been very busy. But ill definitely give you a nice long constructive review.
DO NOT RESPOND TO THIS POST IN THIS THREAD.. I don't want to derail it.
Please keep it to the PM system when responding to this post.

I will say this- fame had NOTHING to do with this contest jermain - your song didn't make the cut because frankly it didn't sound enough liek a space theme - sure it was 8-bitty - but unfortunately compared to some of the other submissiosn that simply wasn't enough.
The main criteria here that was judged was spaciness, catchiness and oldschoolness - the more oldschool sounding it was, the more likelt it would place - the more catchy it was, the more likely it would place - which meant that the song DIDN'T NEED TO BE COMPLEX. It just needed to worm your way into your head. A lot of the submisisosn chosen had wonderful grainy sounds, or epic star-ocean like feelings liek that one submissions did.
Bjra your song had soem epicness about it - but it didn't sound OLD. And the entire point of the contest was to bring the feeling of the 80s space games back - I understand you didn't grow up in that era- buton the same note peopel shoudln't be mad he didn't make the cut when a lot of other people adhered to the guidelines more rigidly than he did - in the end it's all about judging based on criteria.
And calamaistr - yours most likely boiled down to personal preferences from the judges part
or maybe the fact that you've whined about every single thing EVER.
now perhaps the rest of you should be HAPPY for the people that made it - instead of pulling a kanye west all over this operation.

constructive comment for the next contest:
the guidelines should be more concise, not 4 full paragraphs of guidelines. Hell you could have summed up the same guidelines in 1 sentence, not being all vague and complicated with main guidelines and 3 bonus guidelines.
I vote for a 1 sentence theme guideline rule for future contest

tbh the entire title of the contest "oldschool" I think was pretty specific enough.
the more oldschool you made it - them ore likely you would place.
it's not that some of you didn't have quality submissions- it's just that others fulfilled that feeling more precisely - and thus you got pushed down, and sadly didn't qualify.
I feel that msot of the consestants did a wonderful job of keeping it fun, simple (some complex) and just overall wonderfully oldschool in their own ways. Some reminded me of arcade games, others of games liek star ocean, others like games like megaman, everyone took their own spin on a different area of oldschool gaming.
Also cala - I'nm readign your reviews to the other contestants - you're fucking childish - stop spreading your kanye westish drama around the portal. In a way i'm glad you didn't place if you can't even realize that a contest is just for fun, and thus be glad that you had a chance to make a fun song.

Congratulations to the top 8!
This contest was only for fun guys!
If you made your entry for the soul purpose of winning then you clearly missed the point of this entirely!
Sure the whole "oldschool" criteria was a little overweighed but this was a contest to learn from!
There maybe were some mistakes from the judges but they are still trying to conceive the perfect formula for the perfect NAC! They're the ones who created this contest! Without them, you wouldn't of had the joy of creating these awesome submissions!
I think the most rewarding aspect of this contest was the fact that it was FUN to make these submissions!
If anyone else whine's about this contest I will shoot them.
Was it fun to make these songs, it was!
Just be happy for those who made it to the top 8!

Congrats to the guys who made it to the top 8! I didn't think I would make it but then again I just submitted something I made, nothing specific for this contest. Either way I thought it was fun and I'm definitely looking forward to the next one.
