Freshly approved out of the oven of Tom Fulp approval, I bring you February's theme: (Oldschool Version)
Basically make a song that captures thesoul of the oldschool arcade/megaman/phantasy star/battletoads/arkanoid/space invaders type space videogames.
NO REMIXING though, has to be original.
Whether you want it to be arcadeish, or more realistic, like a Star-Ocean feel almost, is up to you! Bleeps and bloops however will also be encouraged! As well as that rockin' feeling that games like Megaman and Battletoads had - pretend the game your song will be used in will be the next cult classic for little kiddies for decades to come!
The winner will be the one who captures the soul of old school space games the best. Most memorable song. Oldschool game music had a tendency to stick in your head. That's the aim here - but for a new imaginary game. Think a new megaman-like game, or a new arkanoid, something that will have you humming that tune forever. Catchiness is key here! As usual production will take a secondary role in being judged, but will still be a judging factor.
Also with it being space themed your submission also scores a very high chance of being used in a flash game. So keep that in mind and try to theme is to that it may fit.
Voices can be used, provided that:
1) It is not sampled from copyrighted recordings.
2) It is 100% your own recording and creation.
3) You can ask another artist or group to provide vocals, as long as all material is newly created for your submission, and you provide the details of the vocalist(s), who they are.
All tracks must be in by the deadline. Please check your Newgrounds in-boxes regularly. If you have a problem with reaching the deadlines, please contact us as soon as possible, and we will review your case.
Submissions must not contain any material deemed offensive.
Further questions pertaining to official NACs can be found in the NAC General Discussion Thread
Last but not least, remember to have fun! Don't get too competitive and/or elitist, or I may have to bash some heads! :P
SID and tracker users, this is also your place to shine!
1) Bonus points will be awarded to those that add a little more complexity to their space themes! I realize though that some of the original arcade songs were.. well.. simple as fuck. Don't want this contest to be seen as mucho easy!
2) Bonus points will be awards to anyone that can capture the oldest most rawest arcade sound in their submissions - for anyone here that's approaching their 30s and actually grew up in that era, you know that raw sound I speak of - reminiscent of atari and commodore 64. These bonus points will be the highest, in order to balance out the other bonus points from the other criteria.
3) Bonus points will be given to anyone that boldly goes the epic "star ocean" like approach - with an epic soundtrack space feel. However since we aren't trying to replicate the previous orchestral NAC these bonus points will be the lowest given. Still prefer it to sound oldschool.
Honestly I don't care, however I SWEAR TO GOD IF I SEE A DUBSTEP ARCADE SONG IN THERE HEADS WILL FLY. Please take this seriously and remain true at least somewhat to the pristine memory we have of oldschool songs - so we're lookngi for that either highly vg feel, or rocking feel, or techno-ish feel - here are some examples:
etc etc etc.
From now till 11:59 PM EST Sunday Feb. 20: Submissions will be accepted.
Wednesday, Feb. 23th: The 8 finalists will be announced, and their submissions will be closely scrutinized and reviewed by our finalist judges.
Tuesday, March 1st: The top 4 will be announced by our finalist judges, as well as frontpaged.
The finalist judges for the Orchestral NAC will be...
To be determined - I will be taking offers from anyone interested - so PM me if you are interested. We prefer judges who have been around the block a few times on newgrounds - as evidenced by the all-star lineup we had last month - so this month we are looking for arcade/space/vg user veterans. I will keep you posted.
Also keep in mind that as a finalist judge you only have ONE WEEK to judge the 8 submissions, so if this is an issue for you, or you think you might not be able to pull through, then PLEASE DON'T OFFER!
At the moment I am the only concrete user down for a judge of this - and sicne about 85% of all my songs are in this category, you're in good hands ;)
We will pick the top three from the 8 finalists.
Here are the prizes
1st Place: $50.00 store credit, weekly feature, reviewed by all judges, 1st place sig (optional)
2nd Place: $40.00 store credit, weekly feature, reviewed by all judges, 2nd place sig (optional)
3rd place: $30.00 store credit, weekly feature, reviewed by all judges, 3rd place sig (optional)
4th place: weekly feature, reviewed by all judges
5th place: reviewed by all judges
6th place: reviewed by all judges
7th place: reviewed by all judges
8th place: reviewed by all judges
This is easy. Just simply post your song like so...
: and yes I'll post my crappy phantasy star 4 remix as an example, lots of bleeps and bloops and sfx and whatnot
If you have difficulty doing this, feel free to ask for help.
Remember to have fun, and good luck!

Each competitor can submit only ONE song for this contest.
Please submit your entry using your regular account, not an ALT.
Collabs are not allowed for the Space Game NAC. Collaborative linking has not been implemented into the audio portal at this time, so it would be difficult to award prizes to a collab winner, for example.
Covers are not allowed for the Space Game NAC. .
For the Space Game NAC, there will be no time limitations. Keep it "reasonable" though. There IS a file-size limit after all.
There appears to be a misconception regarding the rules in light of an off-hand comment ie. "I SWEAR TO GOD IF I SEE A DUBSTEP ARCADE SONG IN THERE HEADS WILL FLY." An "authentic" sound is actually what is being sought after. What Chronamut to say was that he'd to hear songs that sound like they could have genuinely been from the 80sand 90s. Dubstep did not completely appear in it's current form during that time frame. Feel free to interpret however you wish. However, once again use your common sense and ask yourself, "Does this really sound like ti could have existed back in those days?" You DON'T have to make a song that sounds like Paragonx9!
I will keep a list of competitors and their entries HERE. I will update it as often as possible.
As this thread might become more cluttered, it may be more convenient to check there instead.
PEW! PEW! PEW!
I guess I post my song here. I don't have much... didn't take this one too seriously.
Well, I didn't have the chance to participate in the last NAC so I decided to be in this one!
Good luck everyone!
I'll go with my calm, solitary loop I made the other day. Not uber exciting, but it seems not to get annoying with repeated plays.
I may be stupid, but I'm also dumb.
Hmm yeah I think I got something along those lines... we'll have to see
Ahhh, this is what I write music for lol. Lucky enough, I just posted a song that fits this contest relatively well in my opinion. So here is my entry for this contest. Made in Famitracker :3 <3
Hopefully I do well.
Btw, listen with headphones please its 8bit with a-LOT of detail you wont hear on 10 bucks boxes.
Original, classical and retro videogame music composer. (No longer take project clients from newgrounds but if you need a track or two from what ive got pm me.)
I tried to follow the guidelines, but in the end I just had a lot of fun with it...and that's what it is all about.
Developer by day; Deviant by night
I figured it was worth a shot seeing as it has a space theme to it and I just happened to notice there was a space-themed contest going on.
This is on an entirely different plane than the rest of the music in this competition I've heard so far. Looks like I took it differently than everyone else...A little discomforting.
I could use suggestions on the fact that it loops badly.
