People travel the world to see exotic places, explore cultures, and to open their eyes to a world that they have seen so little of. Lots of people criticize cultures and countries without ever even witnessing them - if anything I respect those who want to actually open their mind to the "3rd world".
I've been to undeveloped parts of the world; the key is to be smart and do your research. If you don't play it safe you can put yourself in dangerous situations.
