Items have been banned since SSB64, and the rule will never change. Sonic is not banned, in fact, no one is, even though Metaknight really pushes his league far above others. Sonic is actually one of the lower tier characters. He's pretty terrible, and so are you for losing to him often.

Don't know about you guys, but I miss Adventure Mode and the original usage of Giga Bowser. Plus the Subspace Emissary pissed me off to no end (2-player BS) - only thing I really liked about Brawl were the new graphics and the new characters.

Personally I liked Brawl the most.
The original Super Smash Brothers seems a little bit dated by now and I always thought the action in Melee was a little bit too high paced. That might be more enjoyable to "hardcore" players, but I never cared much for mastering any of the games.
I preferred Brawl for having more single player content and the pacing was more to my liking.
I am no fan of the tripping but that one thing shouldn't be enough to take down a game that has been upgraded in every way possible over its predecessor.
