But the amount of viking in metal lately is starting to piss me off. A lot. Not just viking metal, but EVERYTHING has to be 'viking' these days. They weren't even badass. They weren't even that tall. Nay, my ancestry is Irish, Swedish, and German (1/4 irish, 1/4 swedish, 3/8 german, and 1/8 other unimportant shit). Nay, the Vikings got pwnd by none other than Mother Earth. They were the supreme victims of the little ice age, when the arctic circle became bigger and wiped out most viking settlements.
However, they did go to America before the damn spaniards did, and they did spur the development of a central power in post-Carolingian europe, which was in an even gayer state at the time than the vikings ever were. In fact, if it hadn't been for the galvanising and eventual cross-breeding with the vikings, they would've probably been pwnd by nature and barbarianism. Remember, the Franks and Angles and Saxons and the rest were barbarians as well.
Also, the Viking religion (odalism) is way better than christianity, in that it doesn't look at the world in a black and white view, which is the single gayest thing about xtianity.
In short, you cut the vikings way too much shit. Give them some slack, will ya?
