Of course I am.

For those of you who don't know, Slayer is playing Seasons In The Abyss in entirety on their tour with Megadeth who was playing Rust In Peace in entirety and testament as the opener. (it was an awesome show hahaha)

Anyway, a lot of my metalhead friends on facebook were all bitching about how Slayer's best album is Show No Mercy and that Seasons is a terrible album and all this shit and my one and only friend who agrees with me in saying Seasons In The Abyss is their best album posted this rant:

"Why are slayer playing Seasons In The Abyss instead of Reign In Blood or south of heaven? Little known fact about slayer: They weren't very popular in the 80's. Show No Mercy, Hell Awaits and Haunting The Chapel were very underground. What about their two most successful albums TODAY, Reign In Blood and South Of Heaven? They were both slightly successful but they weren't a commonly known band yet even among the metalhead community! Seasons In The Abyss is the ONE and ONLY slayer album before the 00's that was successful in the mainstream and it's the album that put slayer on the spot to begin with. In fact the only reason slayer are so well known now are because of these five reasons:
1.) The initial success of the album Seasons In The Abyss put them on the spotlight among metalheads to begin with.
2.) The stabbing and murder of that guy in a slayer pit in 1992 being the cause of the law where you can't bring weapons to concerts.
3.) Dave Mustaine shitting on slayer in the late 90's in a interview because "Megadeth is infinity more successful than slayer and it's no secret why"
4.) In retaliation to dave mustaine's comment on slayer, metallica got slayer to open for them on a europe tour in 2000.
5.) Raining blood being featured on MTV starting in 2003 making that song the hit that it is.
Those are the five reasons Slayer are successful as they are."

And his rant is pretty damn right, slayer didn't really become a big deal among the metal community till 1990-1993 and they didn't become a big deal among the nonmetal community until the early 2000's.

So whomever said slayer influenced a lot of death metal obviously has never heard of Possessed, Deicide, Obituary, Cannibal Corpse, Vader, Malevolent Creation, Morbid Angel, Autopsy, Kreator's first two albums, Pestilence, Immolation, Napalm Death, Carcass, Carnage, Entombed, etc.

All the supposed Slayer "influenced" DM bands I've heard were really weak stuff. It barely even bordered on death/thrash. So yeah, haha. You wouldn't even know.

RIP is an exception, thanks to Nick Menza. He was Megadeth's only good drummer.

Maybe that's just me, but I think they really sound wannabe agressive. I feel like they are trying too hard to be badass in their lyrics... Or maybe it's just their attitude...

They did try too hard in the beginning, just look at the backside of Show No Mercy. But I wouldn't say they try too hard now.

Maybe right about Brain Drill, but Origin... Sorry man, but their riffs are strong, powerfull. I really see them as the band who combined Technicality, great musicality and brutality in the best possible way. Origin riffs are the best riffs you will hear in Modern Death Metal. If you know how to listen to their kind of music, you will realise that their riffs are redefining the sound of Death Metal, pushing it to the limits. Their riffs are very melodic and even catchy.

You were talking about the leads, not the riffs. I see nothing melodic about Origin. I did find Portal catchy, but Finite sounded like a clusterfuck of noise. I have nothing against Origin, mind you, I'm just not a big fan of them. I like them better than Brain Drill.

Megadeth are still better than Slayer...

Not a chance.

You're actually calling Evile shit?

The only thing slayer has better than what megadeth has is the drummer, oh and a consistent lineup.

And a vocalist who doesn't sound like he's holding his nose when he sings.

Slayer DID NOT inspire a lot of death metal.

You sure about that?

Considering bands like Possessed and Kreator were releasing proto-death metal albums in 85 and considering slayer REALLY didn't become popular till the late 80's/early 90's that's just stupid.

Slayer released Hell Awaits in 85. They were already popular with the metal community before that, 1983's Show No Mercy was Metal Blade Records' best selling release.

And I have never seen a death metal band cite slayer as one of their biggest influences.

Alex Webster disagrees.

Show No Mercy was Metal Blade Records' top selling album and Slayer was given a producer for their later records. Reign in Blood was certified gold and South of Heaven was #57 on the Billboard 200.

1.) The initial success of the album Seasons In The Abyss put them on the spotlight among metalheads to begin with.

Even though Slayer's earlier albums were initial successes.

2.) The stabbing and murder of that guy in a slayer pit in 1992 being the cause of the law where you can't bring weapons to concerts.

Could you cite that incident? I can't find it on the net.

3.) Dave Mustaine shitting on slayer in the late 90's in a interview because "Megadeth is infinity more successful than slayer and it's no secret why"

Mustaine never said that. He feuded with Slayer because he wanted Kerry King to stay with Megadeth.

4.) In retaliation to dave mustaine's comment on slayer, metallica got slayer to open for them on a europe tour in 2000.

Does your friend cite anything or does he just pull information out of his ass.

5.) Raining blood being featured on MTV starting in 2003 making that song the hit that it is.

So Reign in Blood selling over half a million copies BEFORE that had nothing to do with the song's success. I guess you really do learn something new every day.

Those are the five reasons Slayer are successful as they are."

Funny, all of those reasons weren't based on facts.

And his rant is pretty damn right, slayer didn't really become a big deal among the metal community till 1990-1993 and they didn't become a big deal among the nonmetal community until the early 2000's.

Once again, Show No Mercy was Metal Blade Records' best selling album and both Reign in Blood and South of Heaven made in into the Billboard. If they didn't become a big deal until the 90s, they wouldn't be in the Big Four.

So whomever said slayer influenced a lot of death metal obviously has never heard of Possessed

I thought Endgame was pretty good while The System Has Failed and United Abominations were decent overall. I prefer Megadeth over Slayer since I have found so much awesome stuff from Megadeth throughout their history (except for Risk and The World Needs a Hero but the latter is adequate) while Slayer are just limited to a few albums for me. I've hardly found anything after Seasons worth listening to.

You're actually calling Evile shit?

I bet he listened to Enter the Grave once and classed it as rehash shit and never listened again. Evile are the only band I know of (there may be others) that are actually progressing thrash as a genre instead of copying their idols from the 80's.

Also I may have mentioned them before but I don't know if anyone noticed. Kruger are a fantastic band with a really unique sound, sort of a sludgey death metal sort of thing. I highly recommend their latest album For Death, Glory and the End of the World, I've been listening to it almost every day for the last month.

Got a Black Sabbath cover album with Metal Hammer. Out of nine artists, the only ones I know are Turisas, Amon Amarth, Apocalyptica and Orange Goblin.

Tursias' cover of Supernaut and Orange Goblin's version of Symptom of the Universe are the only ones that aren't complete balls. Amon Amarth's take on Children of the Grave might actually be one of the worst covers I've ever heard. It's on par with Funeral For a Friend's Damage Inc.

Most of those tribute type CD's aren't worth anything. If you're looking for an excellent cover of Children of the Grave, check out Racer X's album Technical Difficulties. The bonus track in Japan is a good cover of it. It stays pretty faithful to the original.

Who the hell said Slayer didn't influence death metal? They did.

Also my little bro had to write a letter to a good citizen for one of his classes, and normally I wouldn't really care. Thing is, he actually got a reply from that person.

Which gets me thinking " who could I write a letter to ? ". So I have decided to write a letter to either Varg, Hellhammer, Maniac, or Gaahl.

I wonder if Varg will reply.

Slayer was not directly DM, however they influenced later DM bands. Slayer was thrash, kind of like Possessed. Hell awaits is one of the more influential Death/Black metal albums. This of course saying that hell awaits wasn't actually a Death/ Black metal album.

Dalnaki, you're so confrontational and full of yourself that you seem like the average Pantera fan. If Slayer didn't influence at least some death metal bands, then I don't know what did. Were they the only influence? Of course not, but they were one of the fastest and most aggressive thrash bands out there at the time (the others being Kreator and Sodom who were just as influential).

Just to let you know, I won't be amusing you any further with this post.

If Slayer didn't influence at least some death metal bands, then I don't know what did. Were they the only influence? Of course not, but they were one of the fastest and most aggressive thrash bands out there at the time (the others being Kreator and Sodom who were just as influential).

You seemed to have missed the part where unlike you, I know what I'm talking about. You can wiki a band all you want, but that doesn't prove anything.

Juggalo metalcore band. No thanks. I thought they were a Slipknot cover band at first because of the masks.

I remember listening to Hammers of Misfortune a while ago. Considering Mike Scalzi was in the band at one point, I had high expectations but for some reason, I wasn't caught on during my first listens. I gave them another try last night and damn, they're really good. I'll have to get one of their albums sometime soon, even though I'm due to get 4 other albums right now.

Most of those tribute type CD's aren't worth anything.

I would have thought the Black Sabbath tribute album would have been decent. From a distance, it didn't look as bad as the Maiden tribute album by Kerrang. Now THAT was a disaster which was barely saved by decent covers from Dream Theater and Machine Head. Metallica did an awful job at playing Remember Tomorrow.
